    Frosting on 63 Wheel Covers

I'm looking for some help in understanding what the "raised center portion" of the wheel cover for a 63 is. The judging guide states that this area is frosted, and I want to make sure I've got the proper coverage.

The attached picture shows a stripped down cover. My take is that the frosting would go from point "A" (the top of the centermost raised area, where the spinner is attached) to point "D" (the "lowest" point of the wheen cover - the area just before the cut-outs).

Can anybody verify that this is correct or give me better guidance? I could also see a number of other options that could work.

    Thanks!

    Seth,
I think there are two different frosting patterns, early & late but I can't easily explain (type) the difference. Be sure before you start, good luck. Don H.

      Seth,

The frosted 63 cap was used only on the early cars up to about VIN 2500 or so. The frosted finish is really only flat alluminum paint. I think I have an original example somewhere around here. If you have an early car, I can post some pics.

BTW, Original frosted caps also have a thicker perimeter rim too. The service replacments have the thinner rim like the polished ones.

Here is a pic that shows where the frosted paint belongs....

And this pic shows the thicker rim of the early style cap. Early on the left and later on the right.

            Seth,

Here are some photos of an original set of frosted caps that we restored. Hope this helps you.

              Chuck-

Can I ask what you sprayed them with to get the "frosted" look? Tracy says above that it's Flat Aluminum Paint. I was curious if you remember what specific color or mfg you used?

John, Maybe Krylon Dull aluminum would work. JD

Krylon Dull aluminum is real close to original.

Guys; I have not been able to find Krylon Dull aluminum paint. They are now a metallic formula.
I needed paint for my valve cover/manifold valley and settled on LIC dull aluminum. It looks good and I would
                    try it on the wheelcovers.
                    Merry Christmas to all!
