    More on PO2 Wheel Covers

Related to the previous PO2 vs PO1 thread.

I was at the Reno Swap meet in Sacramento today. (Yes, I know that sounds goofy. The history of the name is on their website.) Anyway, I'm out there not looking for any particular item to buy and I spot a couple of plastic tubs with six, what look to be PO2 wheel covers, but they have simulated knockoffs with Buick Riviera emblems. I look them over and they are in very good condition except for the light rust line from sitting in those tubs with about 3-inches of water at some time.

The guy says they are off a 1966 Buick Riviera with 15-inch rims. From the back side I can see they are assembled as three pieces with 4 screws holding on the emblem, same as my 69 PO2s. He's asking $60 for the six and I offer him $50 which he takes. I get them home, match them up, and aside from the cap and emblem they are identical to the 1969 Corvette PO2 Wheel Covers.

Aside from scoring a great deal, this adds to the PO1 vs PO2 mystery. The cover and fins were being manufactured in 1966 for the Riviera. It doesn't seem smart to change the fin design slightly for use on the 1968 Corvette then go back to the '66 design for '69. I'm inclined to think that maybe only the cap was different between the PO1s and the PO2s.

So if you are out looking for PO2s, don't skip the guy selling Buick stuff. He might have something you can use. I'm tempted to put the Corvette emblem in the knock-off cap and see how those look.

Here is some pictures of the Riviera cover and my PO2 cover.

They sure look like P02's to me.

      Mike,
If you check back in the archives (maybe 6--8 months ago) I remember someone posted pictures showing two different caps that had the fins ending at the center cap differently. One feathered down smoothly while the other stopped sharp with a minute step-down. I'm am not sure, but this may be the difference between o1s and o2s.

I bought a NOS set of 1972 15" P02's off a Monte Carlo Custom last week for $200.

While I purchased those, I was negotiating for a set of Corvette caps off E-bay and we agreed on $300.

I had to back out of the deal due to settling on the 1wst set but comforted him that they'd sell higher.

They sold for $812 so he wasn't too upset with me for backing out.

If you scour, there's deals to be had on these.

Simply swap the center caps and your good. $200 for center caps keeps things in line to make too much profit though.

IF you can find them without excessive scraping, and dissassemble, polish and paint them you can make some money on these.

They're a Hot commodity right now.
