    half shaft differential seal

I finally began my chassis cleaning for the NE meet. Spent a lot of time cleaning differential fluid as the side seals are leaking. With a 300 mile drive I may be wasting my time unless I get this repaired.

How difficult is it to remove the half shaft and replace the shaft seals? Does it require the gear housing to be removed, or can it be done with the car on jack stands?

    Greg -

The differential housing has to be separated from the rear cover in order to remove the snap rings on the inboard end of the yokes in order to remove the yokes so you can replace the side seals. Suggest you drop the diff out as a unit with the diff crossmember and go from there.

Thanks John. I was afraid of that. Is this a job a novice can handle? I'm quite sure I can get it apart... that's my specialty.

I think I'd save it as a winter project, because once you get it out you'll really want to think about just having the differential rebuilt with new clutch packs, etc.

I agree with Patrick. And do the front pinion seal while your at it, but read-up on the proper procedure so you dont mess up the proper bearing pre-load.

Find someone in your area with the right tools and the knowledge. If you're lucky they can lead you through it. Else I'd find someone who does Corvette diffs on a regular basis and send it out.
