Since I just got my 68 back running, time for new tires, wanting redlines any advice?

The cooper cobras on it which I hate have been on it since mid 90's they have great tread no cracks but I still wouldn't want to go too far on them..

I really think the redlines would look good on this car because it's maroon. However, the 215's on it now I don't think look near wide enough from the rear.

I really like the look of the 255/60's a lot of guys run on their 68-69's

So, if I ordered redlines I would want a 245 or a 255 size, do you guys thinkg that would look stupid to have a wide redline tire like that on the car? I've never seen a wide redline on a car to kinda know how it would look.

Also my 68 wheels are 7" my dad keeps saying he want to put 8" wheels on it to better fit the 245 or 255's but from what I know the 7" wheels should work fine even with 255 size tires, the chart even says 7-9 for a 255 and 6.5-8.5 for a 245.

Just confused on what size to get I don't want to mess the fenders up so 255's scare me but I think look the best if I knew they wouldn't rub or would barely rub thats the size I would get, but may go 245's to be safe.

Anyway, is there a dealer anyone can recommend for a decent looking redline, what brand redlines would have came on my 68 anyway? firestone?

I've also seen firestone wide ovals and "goodyear wide tread gt"

are those something that would be more original looking, are those some of the tire choices back in the 60's? they have a older look to them. I was thinking about those 2 maybe you could get those in wider sizes?

Here is a picture of a 69 version on my car color wise etc..these tires are not redlines in person and on the picture you can see the color matches the car..I wonder did they get them color matched or what? I thought it looked good.

I found some redlines online I like but they're size f70/15..I have no clue what size to compare that so like a 225 or what.

    Brandon,

Your '68 originally had F70 15 bias ply tires. They were made by Goodyear. If you're into having the car judged, the best place to purchase the tires is from Kelsey tire. They have the correct number of thread ribs (9) and pattern. Check out their website at http://www.kelseytire.com/pages/preformancetires.html They give discounts to restoration shops.

I think the redlines look great too.

Yes! those are the ones I found online I like they're called like goodyear speedway wide tread GT.

what width tire is a f70/15 the ones on my car now are 215's and to me they look very narrow for my taste would the f70's happen to be wider?

        Brandon,

Go to the Kelsey website and scroll over the F70 15. They will give you all the specs. and dimensions of the tires. They are not the GT tire however. Read the entire page and I think all your questions will be answered.

          Brandon,
Do you want bias ply tires or radial tires? The F70 are bias ply not radials.

Well here is the deal I would say radials, we plan to just drive this car and enjoy it.

but I'm not sure if I can get that wide stance I'm side from the rear in the redlines, form the side the redlines look great but I don't like a narrow tire so I'm not sure about how a 245 or a 255 redline tire would look yanno? people might think that would be silly, I just don't know how it would look.

but I would say radial as far as the type tire for our needs. Right now I'm just crusing the internet, one site has bfg radials with redlines in wide sizes like 245 and 255s think it was diamond tires I was on when I saw that a minute ago.

Like I said just not sure how wide redlines would look, might be silly looking? but that way it would look like regular redlines from the side which I like but from the rear have that wide agressive look.

              Brandon,
I saw a 67 restomod at last years NCRS Florida Regional that had C5 wheels and tires with a redline and it looked great. I think a wider tire with a redline sidewall would not be a distraction at all. Understand that I think whitewalls remind me of my fathers cars and blackwalls are for cars of today. When I came out of the Army in 1967, I thought redlines were the coolest tire on the earth and I haven't changed my mind today.

I had bias ply redline repos on my 68 Coupe. They looked nice, but it was like driving on roller blades. I put some nice radials on that look ok. I'll check the size and post later.

It drives like so much better that I actually WANT to drive it all the time

                  Brandon,
Here's the BF Goodrich TA's on my 68 with 7" wheels. The tire size is 235/70R15. I would image this tire and the BFG redline is very similar except for white letters vs. redlines.

I put 225-70-15 redline radials from Diamondback on my 68. They look great and drive better. DB was excellent to deal with and can put the redline on any tire that you select.

                          both look great,

think i have decided to jsut go with 245 or 255 white letters, the redlines are so much higher over 200 a piece!

if anyone has pics of 245 or 255 on a 7" wheel like my 68 has post them please

                          thanks for the tips

Brandon, check out a company called Diamond Back Classic tires. I have not personally used them but have heard good things. Not good for judging as they are modified modern tires and not correct reproductions. Try www.dbtires.com. I have enjoyed following the work you have done on your 68. Congrats on what you have accomplished so far. Chip.
