    '63 exhaust system black out

The new 63/64 JG doesn't really describe the level of black out for a '63 exhaust system. Anybody have a good sense of where the '63 exhaust system should be blacked out?
    Thanks.

      Anthony,

Check the archives as I know this has been discussed before.

I think it's safe to say bottom and some sides of the mufflers and oversprayed on the tire carrier so you can't see all that shiney stuff from behind. I am not sure blackout is done on the bottom of the pipes but they liked black paint in 1963..

It is my understanding that there is no documented proof that exhaust systems and mufflers were mitted with black in 1963. As such, when judged, no deduction is normally taken when there is none.

          Gary,

Actually, there's quite a bit of proof that the mufflers were spray coated black on all 63's. In fact, the mufflers were coated black on all 63-67's. It was part of the final "chassis blackout process.
For 63 and 64, much of the rest of the exhaust system was coated too.

The "mitted" term, or process, never existed. The coating was applied with spray equipment.

The coating was a asphalt (tar) base that set up quickly but never dried 100% completely. The same coating that is/was used on non aluminum radiators years ago.

Do a search in this forum for " 64 magazine FI/J56 road test -- rear chassis shot"

and there has been lots of 63 production line photo showing the black rears, you will also find the JG has a reference to black rears - Michael has most of this stuff and believe you can find in past posts!
