    Loose Race

As I was cleaning up the front hub, I noticed that the inner race was loose and turning. Would this mean that a new race would also fit loose or will I just have to try it. This would be an original race with 44K miles. Any suggestions or help are much appreciated.

    Re: Loose Race

I would suggest that you tap the race out of the hub. Then look closely at the hub. You may be able to see signs that the bearing race spun in the hub. Then more then likely a new race would also spin. If you have access to some micrometers you may be able to tell if the race or hub is worn and how much. Loctite makes some products that would hold the race in place if the fit is still reasonably tight. Or you could play it safe and just replace the hub. Good Luck.

      Re: Loose Race

I have repaired loose races by taking a pin punch and going around the surface of the hub lightly "*****ing" it 6-8 times. I then clean it with Loctite cleaner/primer and apply green Loctite around the outside of the race prior to installing it. The Loctite I believe is called sleeve and bearing retainer. Done this many times over the years in hubs, transmission cases, etc. without a failure

In the old days we used a sharp punch until they tapped in tight. No chemicals then. dale

I started using Loctite somewhere in the mid '60's I guess. To a country boy, it was a very magic product

Thanks for the suggestion. When you say "surface", are you referring to the inside wall the race slids against or around the top edge.

Inside, but if you want extra insurance, the outter perimeter after you install the race. 4-5 punches should be enough. The profanity filter will not let me type pin pri*ck around the inside or outside
