    Red Face 8000 RPM AC Tach

    About 20 years ago I heard a few 1957 8000 RPM tachs were used with red faces. I recall these may have been FI and 2X4's in late 1956, possibly engineering cars? 'Any info. on these?

    Thanks!

    Steven;

    I'm sure there may have been what you said, but we'll have to wait for the pros to chime on. As for me, the first thing I thought of when you mentioned red face was the way the early Sun Tachs were referred to. Many C-1's in my day were converted to Sun tachs with a little hogging out of the housing. The red face was just a red oval on the face with the word SUN on it, as I recall (I had a few). Most of these were two piece units with a sending unit mounted under the hood some place. This was followed by one with a complete black face, and I believe this may have also been when Sun went to a one piece unit, or that may have come later. They were very popular. I liked the two piece unit as you could get a 4-cylinder sending unit for when you ran a WH dual Coil distributor - also very popular then. For what it's worth.

      I don't know the significance of the red face dial or the specific application..but you can see one on the Ken Kayser pilot line FI production car he owns.

      There were many dial face configurations of tachs and as many applications.

      There were applications with the 0 setting at the bottom and at the top. Bill Towers 1956 Betty Skelton Daytona beach car has the latter.

      Have you come across a red dial tach?

        Thanks Stu. I have a 2 piece Sun that was in the '57 when I got it. The sending unit was mounted above the air intake hose on the right inner fender. It is on the shelf, now.

        Joe, I have not seen one in person. In the early 90's I spoke with a guy named David Shatz from NY who said he restored 8000 RPM AC's and was going to write a book about them. He told me about the red faces.
