I then tried to heat it up in a metal can. The torch put a hole in the metal can and the tar ran all over the work bench. Then the smoke detector in the garage went off. There's more to this story,but I am too embarrassed.

I just keep the Propane torch on low and the tar will flow out. Do not use an oxy acetelene, I have done three batteries with no problems.

I wanna hear the rest of the story. I have a yellow and a blue torch. I'll be sure to use the blue one when i try this

I was only able to get a pinpoint flame from my little torch. I think what might work better for me would be a tip that has a wide flame or a very low flame.
As for the rest of the story; it was just waaay tooo stupid!
