    57 door glass weatherstrip cloth

frustration setting in. have tried 3-M weatherstrip adhesive and super glue, neither of which will hold the cloth in place(in spite of thoroughly cleaning the rubber with lacquer thinner). any thoughts? thanks, mike

    Mike -

When I did the bowdrill cloth trick on my '57 weatherstrips 12 years ago, I used contact cement - worked OK for me. Jim Frakes may have some hints.

Mike, years ago (44-45) I used interior adhesive I got at the local Chevy store. Years later I used 3M upholstery/carpet spray adhesive.

Where can you get the cloth now?

          If weatherstrip adhesive won't stick...

that tells me there's some sort of mold release or silicone residue on the rubber.

My experience is that lacquer thinner isn't the best solvent for this situation, and actually leaves its own residue.

Alcohol, 3M adhesive remover, PPG DX-440 --all would be a better choice.

For an adhesive, I'm sold on 3M's Super 90 spray cement. Sticks like crazy. Adjustable spray pattern too!

Thanks Mike! I found it! I forget these things are made up from the Chevy parts bins.

FYI - Garry Barnes advised that Steel Rubber changed the Bowdrill material and/or supplier and it's not the same as it once was. Gary....

                      Gary,
As we spoke at BG, over the last few years I have ordered close to 60 rolls of the Steele Rubber bow drill product with the self-adhesive back and have had great success with it.

Unfortunately, the new product (new supplier) is stiffer and the adhesive is different. It is very hard to work with and does not conform to the tight rolls on these window curtain w/s, or stick very well. I have spoke with customer service and they were nice enough to check for any old inventory and to pass along my complaint, but I don't think anything will be done about it.

I was able to buy all of the old rolls they had (4) and have used them all. We are trying to find either another supplier of the self adhesive or find a way to work with the new product. So far no luck on either front. There are several places that advertise the same product, but when you go to buy it you will find that they don't have inventory and just drop ship it from Steele Rubber.

Sorry I can't be of more help at this time.
