Ok guys this is where I'm at (PICS) need a couple things answered tho! so close

Today I installed the new pilot bearing, torqued the flywheel etc..

ready to pop the clutch on but with my resurfaced flywheel...don't I need to degrease it or wipe it down or something? maybe it's not that fragile but looks like I need to REALLY make sure it's dry and oil free.

what do u guys use? I was thinking brake cleaner but I figured why not ask the experts.

any tips or any major things u see wrong with this engine looks wise? it's out of our 68 vert. it's just the l36 version.

I tried to make it pretty close to original looking without getting crazy with it and too picky..because the car is a nice original 54k mile car but we just want to drive it

yes I know..the valve covers ne rechromed they're original so I plan to

just noticed I need to paint the water pump bolts orange! speaking of bolts are those bolts on the lower pulley supposed to be black? I'll paint those too while I'm at if it natural isn't correct.

here is a picture of it a few days ago, please understand I'm not having this car judged but want it to look pretty close to original so what finishes etc..am I off on in this pic? thanks

hopefully it will be running in a couple days..I miss driving it here is a pic below before we pulled the engine.

the only thing I noticed is the timing tab. It should be natiral steel finish, not painted.

    Otherwise --looks damn nice!

Yes you want the flywheel clean and free of anything. Unless oil has been spilled on it, just a slight going over with fine emery cloth should do the trick. If's it is a new flywheel just wipe clean with brake cleaner then scuff up, if just resurfaced shouldn't need anything.

ok thanks terry! pressure plate is on now

this is what I did and it's pretty much what u said..

I took a rag and some brake cleaner and went over both the flywheel and pressure plate very good with it...it simply just evporates away and the flywheel was re-surfaced..so I think I should be good to go!

I probably didn't need to but I also hit the pressure plate bolts with some med. blue loctite like I did the flywheel bolts..and torqued the pressure plate to 35lbs..

        getting close guys!

            Brandon,

Your effort looks very good to me, double check the water pump bypass hose as I think it may be painted orange with the engine. Also, what are the spacers on the water pump, there are flange reinforcements shown in my 67 AIM so they may apply to 68-up, look in archives for some info.

              thanks,

and by spacers you're talking about the metal spacers up front which has several metal spacers?

is that correct or not correct ot have those? I never thought to look into that.

Could someone please tell me right quick are the 3 bolts you see in my top picture on the lower pulley supposed to be painted black too or left natural like they are in my picture?

the engine is going in like NOW so I would like to paint those if they're supposed to be painted.

                thanks!

Since time is the factor, I would go with what you have, bolts could be touched up later if necessary. Steve

Am I missing something here? Why is the pump attaching bolt with threaded stud end installed in the pump's LH upper position vs. the RH upper position?

well the engine is in guys..I'll post pics later!

and seems like that threaded bolt you mention holds a bracket for the ps pump or something..i forgot.

                      nono the alternator i think..

My recollection is the one waterpump attaching fastener that's a threaded stud was installed in the pump's RH upper corner. It served NO function on Corvettes, but was functional on Chevy passenger cars...

They mounted the alternator on the RH side of the engine and used the outboard portion of the stud to secure the passenger car's alternator mounting bracket. Instead of making yet another 'Corvette only' engine build deviation, the stud was used on Corvette engines with nothing attached to it.

You're probably right, because I'm not sure..I just installed it back where it was before we took it off, I have pictures before it was removed and it was where it is now however this engine was .30 over when we bought it...

You have the stud in the correct position for a 68. The earlier BB's had it on opposite side and it was not used as Jack notes on corvettes. For 68 it was moved and the AIR pump brace was attached to it. I believe the Alt brace on non power steering cars may also pivot off the this same stud as well but I don't have access to my car this week to verify.

The 3 water pump bolts and stud should be painted orange.

Thanks John! this site is great.

I was going to swap it if it was wrong so glad to hear this, my car has lost the air smog pump it still had the air tubes in the manifolds tho haha.

I painted all the bolts and left the threads on the stud bare, not sure if the threads are supposed to be painted too if so no biggie I'll spray them too.

                              thanks
