    C1 W.Washer system repair

62 has what I think are all the parts for the washer system but the hoses are all missing or rotted away. Where can I find a diagram showing the hose placement/connections and wiring connections. It is one of my last projects on this great driver. Tony (38576)

    Tony -

Do you have the Assembly Manual?

      Tony,
There is a good washer hose diagram in the 61-62 Judging Manual

Be prepared for the WSW system NOT to work once you replace hoses and get 'er wired. Why do I say this?

These washers were marginal when factory fresh/new. What KILLS them is sitting empty in disuse. The fact that you have rotted hoses visible doesn't bode well in this respect...

The main pump is vacuum powered and a critical component of it is the internal rubber that forms the power piston in the pump cylinder. If that rubber gets dried out and becomes hard, the friction between the pump piston and cylinder wall typically becomes to high for the applied vacuum to drive it.

I only have a Service Guide. It makes no reference to the washer system.
Is the pump located on the canister (under the steering colum, left fender) that would hold the liquid? If so I will pull it and check the pump.

            Tony,
As Jack said the washer system is not simply a pump.
Therefore I do not believe you can remove the pump and test it.
It is powered by vacuum from the intake manifold.
Based on your comments you will need much more info before you can properly test the pump and the system.
            Good Luck.

The pump 'lives' below the lid of the washer reservoir. It's held in place by rivets that sandwich the pump's lower unit to the upper vacuum control unit against the washer reservoir lid.

If you remove the lid from the washer reservoir, you'll see the lower pump assy and notice that it CAN be disassembled while still connected to the lid. There's a steel clip that retains the lower pump piston/spring assy to its upper flange.

If you do disassemble the lower pump, expect to find the return spring FILTHY with rust and the pump piston in a similar state...

Thank you all for your replies. It appears to be a project not worthy of a "driver" as nice as it may be, especialy here in So. Cal. Maybe someday I will tinker with it again.
