    1957 Corvette SS Assembly Movie

    Here's a neat old Chevrolet film that shows the assembly of the 1957 Corvette SS from start to finish; shows Zora, Harry Barr, Rosenberger, Estes, etc. Neat stuff.

      I wish it and the GS's had gone to LeMans. Each time I go back to Indianapolis I stop by the museum specifically to see the SS. The photo dept. at the Indy 500 Museum sells some great photos of the SS taken just after the restoration. I wonder what happened to the top. Did it make it to the museum whrn Zora donated it? I have never seen it displayed.

        Believe that's a first for me, as much as I'd seen and heard having lived through my early Corvette experiences. A comment and a question;

        - Just think of how much more efficient the Engineers and Draftsmen could have been if didn't have to wear neckties. My first job was as a Draftsman and I always hated them - specially when doing Ink drawings.

        - I always assumed that the SS chassis was rebodied with the Sting Ray body (of Dr. Tompson fame). I saw the Sting Ray race at Elkhart Lake and was very impressed with it's speed (and looks) as it even gave the Scarab a run for it's money, but the brakes!! That's probably where I fell in love with the design which led me to order my 63.

          The stingray body is reported to have been built on the SS (Mule) chassis.

            Thanks Joe. Then I guess it is safe to assume both the original SS and Sting Ray cars are still whole, the latter being in it's Silver livery, and sitting in what? the Corvette Museum? I have not been there yet, but hope to get there while I'm still able.

              The silver Stingray Racer is owned by GM and is loaned out frequently. Recently at the Bloomington Special Collection.

                  And people think who thought of the bubble top =GM
                  GM designed my bubble top and was thinking of adding it to the 53-55 line but droped the ball so the company that made them sold off what they had .
