Since the water pump was installed on engine assembly at Flint, I suggest you would be better served tracking the water pump casting date against the engine assembly date. That would eleminate the time lag for pulling the engine from stock at St. Louis.

Actually what I'm looking for is ANY 72 with a 330813 casting. Once I know that, I'll also check closer. In the meantime I'll ask Ed since he's the only one close - other than my car, which won't help.

Lyle, by "square plug", do you mean the one in the attached pic? I recently removed this pump and replaced it with the correct 399 casting.

Yes that is the plug and also the boss it screws into looks different than Patricks picture.

I would be interested in the data but mostly the use of the plug in the first picture. As a 73 judge I'm looking for a pipe plug with a square head and would like to know if the one in your picture could be correct for an early 73 built car built in Sept. 72 or if it was ever correct for any Corvette.

I don't think the internal hex head plug was ever used in PRODUCTION on any 72-82 Corvette. I think that all were the external square head. VERY "funky" looking, but I believe that's how it was.

OK, so car 19388 has a 3991399 dated C 8 2 on an engine assembled April 6th, and car 24796 has a 330813 dated D 18 2 on an engine assembled May 31st.

I know that there are other late 72 small blocks out there - any info?

I wish I would of taken some pictures, but you need a camera and you know what? I left it home. If you need a picture I will try to remember the next time I go up to the garage.

That tells me that 1) the date I just bought - same as yours - would be correct for my car, 22917, and that 2) the 3991399 was used later than the JG currently lists. As Terry noted, we will have to compare engine assembly dates to water pumps.

If anyone else has an April or later 1972 small block, please check your water pump for me.
