Can someone post a couple of good photos of the top, side, and underside of an Original Aluminum Air Cleaner Lid for '62 340hp. I am trying to determine if I have an original or not.

Re: Need good photos of the underside of an Original Air Cleaner Lid for '62 340hp
Jonathan:
Let me know if you still need pictures after you take these measurements, as this is the easiest way to tell an original from a current reproduction. Other differences are very subtle.
Measuring height from bottom of rim/base (as it sits on a flat surface) to bottom of first louver (closest to the rim/base):
Original: 3/8"
Repro: 2/8"
Diameter of brass ring under wing nut:
Original; 7/16"
Repro: 3/4"
Hope this helps.

Re: Need good photos of the underside of an Original Air Cleaner Lid for '62 340hp
Thanks, Bill. This is really helpful, but if it wouldn't be too much trouble a couple pictures of the top, side, and underside of the lid would be especially helpful as well.
I am trying to figure out if there are any differences between an orginal and a reproduction lid when it comes to the flame arrestor on the underside.- Top

Jonathan:
The flame arrestor is the same with the exception of the composition of the retardant material. Let me know whether you got from Vinnie what you need; otherwise I'll post some pictures.
Thanks,

The pictures confirmed for me that I have an original lid, but the flame arrestor is missing. Anyone know where I can get a flame arrestor for my lid? I'll take a good reproduction, if that is all I can get.- Top

Re: Need good photos of the underside of an Original Air Cleaner Lid for '62 340hp
A picture would be better, but I will take a shot at describing.
It is about an 8-1/2" diameter metal disk that has cutouts that look like fan blades attached to the back of the lid via a brass grommet on the through hole of the lid. Between the lid and the metal disk is a material (originally a combination of goat hair and jute) that serves as the flame retardant, making the unit a flame arrestor. I hope this helps.- Top

Re: Need good photos of the underside of an Original Air Cleaner Lid for '62 340hp
Attached a 4 pictures of the top and bottom of 62 Corvette air cleaners.
I believe #2 which is on my 340 HP 62 is the correct filter. I have put abouy 30,000 miles on this filter, as you can see the flame arrestor has gotten hot a few times.
Note the size of the brass washer.
As far as the foam and the zig zag retainer goes. If you are going to drive the car get a AC A350C paper filter and install it.
The foam filter is correct for judging but turns to dust after a few years.
I will show a picture of the deteriorated foam filter in another post.- Top

Re: Need good photos of the underside of an Original Air Cleaner Lid for '62 340hp
Like i said....I had a new 340hp 62 and my air cleaner did not include a "flame arrestor".....I just looked at Noland Adams 1953-1962 restoration guide and he states on page 331 that the 1961 had one but the 1962 did not.- Top

Re: Need good photos of the underside of an Original Air Cleaner Lid for '62 340hp
The NCRS 1961-1962 Judging Manual states that the air cleaners (for both 61 & 62) underside "contains a flame arrestor which measures 8 3/8" in diameter, held in place by a 7/16 grommet-type brass fastener for the single four-barrel cover".
So Johnathan, if you are getting the car flight judged go with a air cleaner with a flame arrestor.- Top

Johnathan,
Concerning the availability of a flame arrestor for a 62 air cleaner.
I believe Vette Products of Michigan currently makes the whole air cleaner assembly.
You might check with them for the flame arrestor.
Good luck.- Top
