what is the function of the transformer on the speaker? is it only to convert the speaker to 10 ohm? what is the impedance of the actual speaker? who re cones them?

Re: speaker for 66
Anyone who has the parts and knowledge can re-cone the speaker. Prices will vary with who does the work. The service is done rather frequently for classic musical instrument amplfiers.
The transformer on the speaker is only half used (for its inductance profile on one side) and it, along with other, components, form a filter between the radio's DS-501 audio output transistor and the speaker to protect the transistor.
You MUST have this (or an equivalent) component in circuit or you'll blow up the DS-501 (2N278) transistor for sure!
To 'simplify' things for non-EE types, folks simply refer to the transformer as an impedance matching component, but that's NOT what it's all about. To go much further with the explanation, you'd have to understand the difference between silicon and germanium transistor technology. That's a LONG story...- Top

Re: speaker for 66
thank you. i have been a car audio guy for 35 of my 53 yrs but did not know that. back in the 70's we would series 2 4 ohm spks to get close to 10. i am amazed that the radios still work when given a new speaker after years of being dormant often left turned on with no load at all. i would still only have a factory set up in my 66 even though i own a radio store.- Top
