    San Jose Concention

Just got back from San Jose today and I would like to say "Thank You" to all of the folks who put all the hours and hours of work into this event. I enjoyed myself tremendously and appreciate all the hard work the California folks and the volunteers put in. Thanks!

Hey Bob. I know you were at the Convention -- I saw you there. Where was the Concention? I think I missed something.

Terry, you must've flown low, so to speak. Good to meet Zoe at the Convention. Wish her best with the leg! Yeah, think Bob was into the schnapps when he made the post. We had a great time at San Jose! Gary....

Not home yet Gary. We are close though. We (traveling with Gary Bosselman) made almost 900 miles Saturday, after 800 miles on Friday. It will be an easy 500 mile run today. Nothing like a C6 for eating up the miles. These C6 Corvettes are the best bang for the buck around. The computer (and I don't trust it) said I got 30.2 mpg on the fill at a Chevron station in Reno, and am showing 30 mpg on the computer now in the flatland. I'll believe it when I enter the numbers in the computer at home, but even if it is in the high 20s, it is remarkable performance. Maybe I somehow got gas with no alcohol.

Zoe had a good time, as did I. Many members went out of their way to help her get around.

My thanks too to all those who worked so hard to help all of us have a good time. After all these years I do have some idea of how much work goes into these things, and it is a whole bunch. Many people from the California chapters worked behind the scenes for a long time before any of us arrived in San Jose. Kudos too to Bill Sangray. He too spent loads of time so that those of us on the Road Tour could enjoy the ride. I admire the selfless dedication of those who knuckle down and give so freely of their time for the benefit of the rest of us. That kind of goodness is what makes this organization work.

I couldn't resist yanking your chain Bob.

That is better than complaining about the hotel distance from the part of the convention center we used for the cars, and the nickel and dime the hotels do to up their bill, and the fact that the Marriott is taking four days to adjust the charge they put on my credit card when I arrived.

The real negative was this organizations lack of principles in going to a town that doesn't allow car washing. The registrants didn't find out about that until they paid the registration fee. The organization officers should have told San Jose to take their water ban and do without our green money. What foolishness bringing 125 cars to a town that bans car washing. Sure 3/4 probably came in trailers, but the rest of us had dirty cars. I guess I should have gone to the board meeting and offered my 2 cents, but I have to be at work Monday and I couldn't drive 2/3 of the country in two days.

"They will pry my wash mitt from my cold dead hands."

In honor of all those San Joseans (Is that a word Reba?) I washed my car here at home and left the hose running all the time. I have a big Fing lake at my doorstep, and I will use it until there is no more water in it.

BTW: I had the pleasure of meeting some of the fine citizens of San Jose in the Convention Center. One had his bed roll with him in the elevator as I was taking Zoe back to the Marriott from the banquet. He was well into the conservation of water from the smell of him. Maybe they restrict bathing in San Jose also. I also met a fine young family enjoying the cool of the Convention Center air conditioning. They seemed to be living out of their child’s stroller.

This kind of stuff is all a part of life, and part of the "fun" of the event -- dirty car an all.

On the plus side were the nice and friendly members we met. Folks from all over the country. It really warmed my heart to see some of the Heritage cars too. There are lots of great racecars on the West Coast.

I was also thrilled to see the numbers of people who stood when Bill Sangray asked them who came with the Road Tour. From where I was sitting it looked like 1/4 to 1/3 of the audience stood up. It seemed to me that is a huge number.

Some of the side-trips offered at the convention were real nice. The Chevron fuel laboratory was a treat for us techies. I particularly enjoyed it since many moons ago I worked in a research laboratory. The boat cruise on San Francisco Bay was a wonderful treat also. The scenery is to die for.

The drive to and from the convention was exquisite. Bill had many Route 66 options for the tour, and of course the drive from the Hurst Castle to Monterey was as good going north as it had been seven years ago going south. And leaving California via I680 & I80 has some breath taking scenery in the Sierras.

Also, as I posted above, driving a C6 is the cat's meow.

I got 28.2 mpg for 4552 miles. Would have better except for couple of heavy footedness. Rt. 66 had so much to offer, I am sure we missed a bunch. Sure glad for cruise control in Wyo. The HP likes to hide. We stopped in Reno, Park City, Cheyenne, and Salina, Ks. So much to see in them also. Looking forward to Charlotte, Bill!
