    Stu,

I think you are refering to the choke piston vacuum draw on the fresh air tube. I am talking about the hot slot under the stainless shim on cast manifolds.

      Tim;

Sorry to have confused the subject by including the choke plugging story together with subject of the cross over manifold passages in the intake manifold. Next time I'll separate the subjects into paragraphs. I'm well aware of the difference, or should be after all these years.

        Re: Carter carbureator

Today, I disassembled the top of my AFB to check for any obvious problems. I purchased a rebuild kit from LI Corvette. While researching past posts I read where the accelerator pump leather may be too small where the leather does not fully cover the spring underneath. I pulled my accelerator pump and my pump has the small leather plunger. The replacement accelerator pump in the rebuild kit has a larger leather plunger that extends beyond and fully covers the spring underneath. I dont know if this matters, but the new pump leather is colored pink.

But here is my concern, the replacement accelerator pump is shorter measuring 2.24 inches. The accelerator pump that I removed was longer, measuring 2.47 inches. The longer pump has an ID # 625 stamped on it.

If I install the new pump, the plunger will sit higher in the bore, but the stroke should remain the same. Can you guys offer any advice?

        Thanks.

          John,

I have seen this before with a kit for my Carter. I think you can extend the rod by unscrewing but I am not sure of the dimension. Better wait for others to post so you can be sure. The external adjustment is approx 1/2" rod above the top lid so this pre loads the pump diaphram.

IMHO, the cup height should not be higher than the float level. I don't have one in front of me to look but it only makes sense. Make sure to get this right because this adjustment can affect the problem you are trying to correct.

Here is some reading on the Edelbrock carburetors, keep in mind there are some differences but if your carburetor calibrations are at stock settings the timing of the pump shot is where I would be looking.

            Tim,

When I examined the old pump, it looked like it had been adjusted by twisting it, I could see threads visable. I tried to twist the new pump to lengthen it, but I did not want to force anything.

I checked the float heights and readjusted per the shop manual. I found the float level dimension to be larger than 7/16 which meant that the fuel level in the bowls was probably too low.

I put it back together but we're having the the northest snow storm this weekend so I could not go for a test drive. I backed the car partially out of the garage to start it up. When I went to drive it back into the garage, I gave it gas and and released the clutch as I normally would. One tire chirped and suprised me.

I think I might have the problem solved after replacing the accelerator pump and adjusting the float level.

I never expecterd the carb to be the problem as I have receipts from the prior owner for a rebuild. The outside of the carb looks practically new.

Once I drive it I'll let you know the what the outcome is.

            Thanks again. Happy holidays.
