Ok, I've been piddling on my paint job today and was sanding on the front underside and got side tracked looking at the brakes. I thought "geez, I don't remember my 71 having calpers like that" so I jacked it up, took a picture and got the casting number 5452270 inside casting and 5452273 outside casting. I don't see a reference in the judging manual and I can find my 69 and 71 assembly manuals but not my 70 (Murphy's Law loves me). Am I looking at standard brakes or heavy duty? 70 LT-1.

Re: 70 brake ID
Those are standard, single pin, dual piston calipers. J56 (Heavy Duty) brakes had two pins located at each end of the pad slot (you can see where they would be drilled), and also they used insulated pistons so that the brake fluid wouldn't boil under hard use. Both the single and dual pin units used the same casting number cores, just that one was drilled for dual pins, and the middle pin "ear" was milled off so the top of the caliper appears flat.- Top

To quote Joe Lucia of 6 months ago in another thread (Archives are your friend):
"The only caliper half on the car which has a correct casting number for a 1969 is the 5452273. All the others are from 73-82 models or SERVICE caliper halves."Vice-Chairman (West), Michigan Chapter NCRS

Re: 70 brake ID
Yes, I seem to recall that was in reference to a car that had one 5452273 and other calipers of the 547XXXX and, possibly, 546XXXX series. For that car, only the 5452273 was original. In this case, both the 5452273 and the 5452270 are the correct front caliper half castings for a1970.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
