    1970 Exhaust Systems

I am looking for a correct replacement exhaust system that will pass NCRS judging. Are there any recommendations? This is for a 1970 350/350 4 spd.

Les, Ive got a 72 sm. blk. and have been looking myself , the discussion board has had alot of talk about just whats the most correct system. and I believe that gardners exhaust systems make the closest , but its not exact, bends are slightly different on front pipe, and it not the carbon steel as factory used the rear muffler does not have the embossed (w) on it. the other system I think might be a choice is corvette central which does have the carbon steel system and comes with rear muffer and mid pipe welded to muffler as the factory, the gardner system need to be welded. theres is nothing thats as the factory built.

Have you checked out Allens Exhaust? Does anyone have an opinion on their systems?

Les there are no totally correct under car exhaust systems all will take some what of a deduction. With that at a chapter meet depending on the judges product knowledge you may receive no deductions but at higher levels that will not be the case. You have to decide what amount of deductions you are willing to live with and the cost of the most correct system. The best thing to do is a lot of research of what is correct what I mean is look at original cars with original exhaust hard to find but they are out there and then look at the systems that are available and decide what is best for you. The only other option is to find original over the counter parts have the mufflers and center pipes welded to make them look correct or a complete original take off system. Both very expensive. You might want to opt for aluminized over carbon steel. The aluminized will take a small originality deduct, but the carbon steel will take an equal or larger condition deduct for corrosion.

Corvette Central sells a very nice welded carbon steel system.

Yes, for carbon steel or aluminized, I think that Corvette Central has one of the best systems out there.

Also, Les needs to be sure he gets the 2" system. 1970 L-46 originally used a 2" system and NOT a 2-1/2" system as some folks believe. For 1970, the only small block that used a 2-1/2" system was the LT-1.

If someone will donate an original 2" exhaust system to Gardner, they will duplicate it . Problem has been getting decent original parts according to Gardner. They already make an about perfect 2-1/2" LT1 system for the 70.

I went through this about 9 months ago and ended up going with CC Aluminized as mentioned in a post above.

                    Hey Guys,

I would like to weigh in here. We do make that exhaust system now and it is copied from originals. We have the correct bends in the rear pipes and have smooth front pipes to match the originals. If you visit our website you can see the pipes niext to originals.

                    Best Regards,

                    Eric Gardner
