    66 Restoration Help?

I am restoring a 1966 BB cov. and having trouble finding resources on paint references.
    1. What black, type (semi-gloss, gloss) paint to use on the exterior glove box lid? Will this take a special type of paint to stick to the brushed alum. does it need to be primed?

    2. What black, type or paint manufacture to use on the glove box hinges and glove box frame?
    3. What type of paint, color, manufacture for the interior panels and the metal dash trim? My interior color is saddle but what paint is recommended?

I will be looking to have the car judged so I would like to assemble the car correctly.

Barry - Restorers have used both Krylon Semi Flat Black and Rustoleum Semi Gloss Black for their interior pieces. Personally, I used the Krylon Semi Flat Black for my steering column pieces and for the glove box door frame. I used the Rustoleum Semi Gloss Black for my instrument cluster and the glove box door. That strategy matched my original components perfectly and the judges have been happy with it (so far). The components were not primed from the factory.

The PPG code for interior low gloss black is 9292 if you decide to get paint mixed and spray with a gun.

My '66 has a dark blue interior and I know what that PPG code is but haven't been able to find the interior paint codes for the other colors. The PPG code for low gloss medium saddle from 1963 through 1965 was 22298 and was the same for all those years. I would assume it remained the same for 1966.

Search the archives for other discussions on shade differences especially on the saddle interior. It seems like most owners have many shade variations between the interior conponents.

I had a paint shop mix a batch of interior dark blue paint for my car and I got a great result spraying it myself. Again, I had the original components to compare. Others have used interior dye and spray cans from Tower Paint and from the main parts houses. Don't know if they're happy with their results or not.

        Re: 66 Restoration Help?

Barry, for the center console (black interior cars only), the glove box and the gauge cluster, I've been told that the brand SEMS makes an Interior Black that works the best. So, I sought it out at a local paint shop and bought a can plus their Bulldog primer.

I have been painting a lot of other parts with Rustoleum Semi Gloss black. I have yet to paint the glove box with the SEMS product, so I'm not sure how much of a shade difference there is. I'm told the SEMS is a perfect match to the original, but I haven't used it yet.

Gents, man! Loads of info. quick. This is my first post and the replies really paid the membership dues. Thanks again. I'm sure I'll have additional questions down the road.

My interior is orginal, my father has owned the car since he was 18 in 1971 (only 36K miles) and its been sitting ih his garage until I dusted off the shell and am ready to restore.

I have pulled the stainless around the windshield to be polised, removed the side pipes to be polished, pulled the glove box and ready to get things rolling.

          Thanks
          Barry

Barry, just a comment about finishes. I have been restoring my 67 for the past few years here and learning as I go along. The trouble is, sometimes I didn't learn about the correct finish before I restored a particular part. I would encourage you to learn as much as you can before you start outsourcing parts. Plus, it all depends on what you want in the end. If you want a high Top Flight car, take the time. If you want a nice driver, restore it anyway you like.

The reason why I say this is because of your "sent the sidepipes out to be polished" comment. I can just see the judging sheet on your car now. "5 point deduct, sidepipe covers too shiney".........

For example, I started cleaning and polishing my overflow tank, and was advised (after I cleaned and polished it up) that it was too shiney, and I should dull it down......it is THE original tank that came with the car.

            Just an observation.

Good point, do you know the correct way to restore the side pipes. The raised section should be polished and the channeled area is dull, right. The dull area appears not to have any paint but I am not sure. Any ideas?

Also do you have knowledge on the type of paint (name brand) for the frame? As well as the brackets that hold up the bumpers?

How about the convertible frame, I have a small amount of pitting rust and the frame needs to be restored. I reviewed your photo lib. very nice car. Real nice!

Do you know if the console of these cars is stainless, I just purchased a repair kit this morning?

              Thanks

                Re: 66 Restoration Help?

                Barry,
Sorry, I can't help with the questions you asked. I don't have side pipes on my car. On the frame, I know many have used an Eastwood chassis black product with good effect. I powdercoated mine, since after judging I'll be driving my car as much as humanly possible.

Thanks for the compliment on the car. Much appreciated.

In terms of the convertible top frame, I haven't gotten to that yet in my restoration. Sorry, not much help there either in terms of a specific product to use to recondition the metal. I'd suggest trying a search in the archives for something.
