    Thread repair

Need to repair stripped bolt holes in the frame, for the fuel line clips. Any suggestions on repair, so that the original bolt size can be used.

    Bob,

I think I responded on your other forum post. I typically would weld up the hole only a tiny amount. If you do this creatively you will be able to screw the old bolt back in with no problems.

There are other ways to do this from putting fiberglass in the hole, to using expansion plugs but for me the only right way is weld it.

Another option if you want a quick and easy fix is to fill it smooth with JB Weld, and drill and tap another hole right next to it.

The clip will cover the original hole if you get close enough, and you'd be done quicker than it takes to hook up the welder.

I agree welding and re-threading is the right way to fix it though.

But on a fuel line clip hidden under the frame, I confess I'd probably take the easy short-cut with either that, or a heli-coil thread repair kit.

Since the fuel line and brake line clips are secured by self-tapping screws into just the thickness of the frame material, helicoil and other methods of repairing other female threads will not work.

Anything that reduces the size of the "threaded" hole will work (paperclips have been used for door panel screw holes), but the best permanent solution is weld material deposited on the edge of the hole as Ernie suggested. In my opinion, it doesn't have to be around the full perimeter, just a "tack" at one location will probably be enough. Just be sure the "heat" of your welder is set low enough to melt and deposit material rather than burning the hole larger.

My "pull handle" on my passenger door panel is stripped. I haven't got that far yet, but I think I found my fix.

JB Weld is also drill and tappable. (I love that stuff)

Try a threaded insert like the Harbor Freight item 1210-6VGA.

I think the welding process is the way to go. Thanks for the advice. I have a mock up,to practice on.

The harbor freight tool mentioned will only repair up to 1/4" size and these frame holes are 5/16", I am not sure they have a tool to go larger.
Riv-nuts have been mentioned before on the D/B as I need to get some myself.

I have used the thread repair kits in the past and they are magical. Basically has two gels. Firstgel is put into the hole to fill in existing threads then coat your bolt with a releasing agent and screw in. It molds new threads and when probably setup you just unscrew the bolt. Works great for low torque requirements.
