Correct Color / Finish Questions - Brakes & Driveshafts

I'm in the midst of a "frame off" on a '64, and need the correct color / finish for the brake drums and the anti-vibration springs wrapped around the drums? Also, what is the correct color / finish for the driveline and rear half-shafts? Were there paint ident. daubs, stripes or rings on these parts? If so, what colors, size and location? Thanks.

Hi Jeff, lots of info in archives about this, but in a nut shell, the rear end, half shafts, brake assemblies with emergency cables were all painted as a sub assembly prior to being installed in the chassis. BLACK is about all you'll see.

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

Dan Correc! However take caution with that action! Judges seem to expect no paint on rear end or half shafts. My half shafts cleaned up so nice just did not want to paint so lost points for black rear end, now everything is back to normal - all black.
The JG on page 146 does say "Evidence of blackout paint is not unusual on all rear suspension components. . ."

If it is blackout now I would redo it the same - if natural do that.

        Jeff,
If you want your 64 to look original the black was sprayed on the chassis as an assembly complete. The separate finishes are not detailed as in later mid years. Black paint is typical one sided not too complete in coverage with runs and drips. You may not be pleased with the look of a true, correct 63-64 chassis restoration.

How refreshing it is to see that at least some/most of the 63-64 guys now understand/agree that the differential, drive and control arm/brake assy's on 63-64's were coated with chassis black before being installed on the chassis.

I think the JG recognizes this now too.

            About time!

Would you call it chassis black or just black goop?
I never got a good definition on this. Here are some pics from the frame we did last year.

Note the location of the marks on the gear box.

Here is the shock bolts after we removed them.

In this picture you can see where it ran on the shaft. The clean areas were covered with this stuff, the rusted areas were raw.

Would I restore one this way? Well I didn’t at the customer’s request.

I really don’t know how I would do it if it were my car. On one hand I wanted to do it, on the other I thought the frame just looked way to nice to put this stuff on it. Glad it was not my choice.

Well Ernie, looks like everyone agrees with the near complete coverage of black on the rear susp and drive components. Now we're getting somewhere.
