    Vent window regulator

    I have a 63 SWC.
I had my (2) vent window regulator "Restored" (don't remember by whom).
I lost 12 points for "worn Vent windows". There is approx 1/4 turn backlash in each.
I removed the backing plate, both gears are in new condition, show no wear.
So the back-lash is caused by the spacing of the gears to each other.
I tried to shim the pivot shaft either way, but the back-lash remains the same.
Should I remove the large gear, (which rotates the window), and add/retract to the shim ?
The rivet posts for the backing plate are still there, assuring me that the crank gear is on the correct centerline. Screws hold the plate in place.
Would that change the centerline of the gears to each other ?
Also, what is the best way to bend back the peened-over ridge ? (which holds the window pivot shaft assy plate in place)
I searched the archives, there were plenty of comments, but none which describe the back-lash adjustments.

    Re: Vent window regulator

Rainer, glad you apparently solved your speedo gear problem. You need to yeal at the guy who rebuilt the tranmission for doing that.

Now on the Vent window regulator. This is how we apprach it. The rear cover is held on by the boss being peined over the steel backing plate. Grind/file off the boss until it is flush with the plate, this will allow you to remove the plate and the handle gear and wavy washer. You want the handle gear to move into the window gear so we slot the boss holes in the plate so when the handle gear and plate is installed the slots allow the handle gear to engage further into the window gear. Its trial and error but an 1/8" slot would probably be too much.
Put the regulator in a drill press and drill the center of the bosses for a 10-32 machine screw, then tap it all the way through 10-32. Use 10-32 x 3/4" or so with a flat washer and a lock or star washer. Grease it all up, put it back together and test it out. If either of the gears teeth are really bad this will only take most of the slop out, replacement of the gears is the next step. My way is cheap and works pretty good.

      Re: Vent window regulator

      Scott,
Thanks for explaining how to do this repair.
The restorer, who did mine, used the (2) existing bosses, drilled and taped for a sheet metal type screw. The plate is positioned by the (2) bosses. The top of the boss is slightly below the top surface of the plate. Works pretty good, the plate is fixed.
I will do a similar fix, like you did:
I will elongate the (2) screw holes in the plate 1/8". I will still keep the (2) bosses. (That way I still have exact side-to-side position).
I will open-up the tapped hole to 10-32 thread.
I will adjust the plate at assy, for no back-lash. After I am satisfied, I will remove the screws, on-at-a-time, fill the space between the slot in the plate and the boss with J-B Weld. That way, the plate can't move away from the pivot gear centerline.
I will let you know, how it works...

Elongate the cover, works ! No more back-lash.
Final question: Does the wavy spacer go wavy side up (toward cover plate) or down ?
