    63 Glove Box Door

I am refinishing my 63 glove box door and have a couple of questions.

    1. What can I use on the back side of the glove box door panel, there are little scratches in the silver? I was thinking a rattle can of silver paint?

    2. What do I use to glue the outer door to the fiberglass frame? I have scraped off some very hard black gunk. (I'm sure thats not a technical term)

    Thanks for any help.

Greg, please post a picture as it does not sound like a 63 door!

Wow, I've never seen that happen before. Where did all that black paint go? Usually these can not be restored because of the damage but yours doesn't look too bad.

Anyway, you idea of silver paint sounds reasonable. I'd spray some on test plastic and see what color it dries. If it looks good test one small scratch. You can isolate one with cardboard or spray some paint in a dish and use a small artists brush to paint the scratch.

As I recall semi-flat black over the silver.

3M weatherstrip adhesive (black) will adhere the two parts together.

Thanks for the help again. So after I get the silver touched up, I am to spray the entire back with black?

Everyone I've seen is black. Just doublecheck the color of black, flat, semi, or gloss?

Wouldn't that black on the back side be the adhesive that attached the face panel to the back panel?

I am sure thats what is on the back.

That is why I was confirming about spraying black spray paint on the back after touching up the silver?

I have already refinished the face of the panel.

                  Greg:
For the silver scratches, try a Sharpie Metallic Silver marker. Since the marker is a bit wide, I would recommend that you immediately wipe over the scratch with a paper towel or clean rag as soon as you swipe it with the marker (or you could tape around each scratch if feasible). This will keep the color in the scratch, but not on the metal next to it. I use the silver pen on rims with road rash and other brushed metal touch-ups, and a black one to touch-up the glove box, cluster, and center console (make sure they are permenant markers). I don't go overboard because although the repairs look very good, you can sometimes see a difference in the finish in certain lighting. Give it a try. If you don't like how it looks, you can always try the paint touch-up or spray the entire back side of the door panel. If the Sharpie doesn't match very well, there might be other marker brands with a different shade of silver. I also use Dr.Colorchip to touch-up the Rally Red paint on my '65. If you have scratches that are deep enough that your nail catches, then their touch-up process works very well. It could also work on the silver glove box door if you don't like the marker, and if you decide that you don't want to repaint the entire door. Check out their website if you're interested. They will work with you to get a matching color to anything - especially with a sample.

                  Good luck,
                  Roger (50141)

There is no black paint on the back side of the front panel. It should be just as it appears in the pic. The black you see is the bonding adhesive that attaches the plastic front panel to the black plastic rear panel.

I think we are all on the same page now. I tried the silver sharpie, worked perfect. Hope to glue the face on tonight.

                        Thanks all.

                          Greg:
Glad to hear the Sharpie worked so well. It's an easy way to get some very good touch-up results. Make sure that you store the marker "tip down" so it isn't dry the next time you need it. I'm sure the completed project will look great!

                          Best regards,
                          Roger (50141)
