In the process of restoring my rear license plate bezel(aluminum) I found rust deposits imbedded in the aluminum where the tail light housing contacted the metal. I don't want to try and scrape it off for fear of ruining the finish of the aluminum. The deposits are around the edge of the opening in the bezel where the tail light assembly goes in. Is there a chemical treatment anyone knows of that will dissolve the rust without attacking the aluminum? This car will be a driver but I still want it to look good.

John, I think you can purchase navel jelley for aluminum, that may do the trick.- Top

Re: Removal of rust deposits on aluminum
If it is rust from iron (versus oxidized aluminum), I use liquid wrench and a tooth brush. Then clean with a non-corrosive solvent. Soap and water and a good drying to finish up. WD-40 doesn't seem to work the same.- Top
