I'm with you Tom. Some of those newer paints will kill you before they make you sick. At least with lacquer one will get sick before you die.

Low humidity in Georgia doesn't exist and 70 degrees is called winter so you just have to adjust. I took that into account and bought a couple quarts extra because I knew it would take a coat or two and a bit of light sanding to get the adjustment right. It was hot so I kept having to adjust down the pressurefrom the specs and tweak the flow and fan till it was acceptable. I didn't have the luxury of waiting till later in the year because my work space is borrowed (I live in a condo now) and the booth was as much about courtesy to the friends who loaned me their garage as it was for controlling the conditions for the spraying, I wanted to cut down on any overspray/fumes they might have to endure. Of course spraying has always seemed the easy part for me, it's the taping before and the buffing/polishing after that makes the bulk of the time and work.

Right on Terry! It was an ozone layer depletion tactic of the 'green guys'. Kind of ranks up there with the pronouncement of Lake Erie being 'dead' to all aquatic life forms forever...

Amazing how quickly we forget our past environmental foibles, eh?

BTW, you WILL notice that certain forms of lacquer paint were specifically excluded from the EPA's regulation list. A glaring example is one used MILLIONS of times each day in the US...fingernail and toenail polish!

Can you imagine the political backlash that would have resulted if we'd had the hutzpah to tell American women they had to wait 30+ minutes for their makeup paint to thoroughly dry!!!

Congrats Wayne and I'm looking forward to seeing some pics of the finished product. Back in the 70's I was faced with a simular situation. Having done some body work and painting with a person who owned a body shop I felt confident that I could do a full car paint job but thought I would still prefer to avoid the mess at my house and have a shop do it. Well having more ambition than money was enough to push me over the edge. I did leave some evidence of doing a paint job in the garage but the satisfaction of doing it myself was well worth it. It turned out great.
I sold the car about 5 years later and one of the selling points was the paint job. The guy couldn't believe it was a garage job. He said he didn't think I looked like a painter. I politely asked him "whats a painter look like?".

I have a copy of the Al Sowash video "Professional Auto Painting, Secrets for Success". I watched the video but pretty much already knew the info, I did pick up a few tips that were helpfull on the project. The video is in VHS format which I don't think you can get anymore so, if anyone is contemplating painting their own and wants some extra info I'll be happy to give it to you, just leave an address and I'll send it out.

Thanks for your phone number, I'll be sure to give you a call. What is a good time to call? I could also use a copy of that video if possible. I tried to find one a year or so ago and looked all over the net with no luck. I'll have to see if my old VCR still works though!
