N03 Tank question (Joe Lucia & Wayne??)

Anyone know what the original 1/8" NPT pipe plugs for the drains on the 36-1/2 gal tank looked like? Were they hex head with any markings or just a square head like on a common pipe fitting.

    Thanks

Ron -- You sure know how to ask the tough ones . Did a quick check on my early '65 tanker and they seem to be indented hex head. Tomorrow, I'll see if I can clean them up and take a pic. I've never had them out (even when I removed the tank in 1985, out of curiosity), so I wouldn't have even known that they were 1/8" NPT.

I assume that these are item # 13, part # 444613 on page UPC N03, sheet 4 of the '65 AIM.

Looking in '65 P&A30 (Rev. July 1, 1965), Gr 8.970, I see it is described as 1/8" Hex. Hd. Dryseal, Cad. (price $0.06)

I ordered and received a bag of these in the mid 70's. The plugs that came in had a hex head but it was flat, not indented. Probaly incorrect?

The plugs that I have are hollow on the threaded end, just as the print shows.

GM #444613 remains available from GM to this very day.

Thanks everyone for your help. It looks like I have 1 original correct type and one poser! Will see about getting some from local Chevy dealer.

              Thanks again

                Ron----

Keep in mind that while the part under the original part number is still available from GM, that does not mean that it will be identical in every nuance of detail to the ones originally used. The current part could vary in minor ways and still meet the GM spec for the part. However, it's worth a try since these are not very expensive.

Ron & others --- OK, here's what's on '65 # 014xx. Don't have a lift, so excuse the picture quality (had to stretch under the car ).

On mine, the 1/8" Dryseal plugs are indented hex head with a large raised circle that surrounds large capital letters "F-C"; same on fuel pickup sumps of both sides. Seen best on pics # 2 (left) and 3 (right).

IMHO, more interesting that the subject drain plugs are the brass blocks. Note on passenger side tee block (pic #3); it has the typical Weatherhead stampings (but more than 4 mentioned in the '65 TIM&JG -- 4_1/2 in fact [would take a big hit on chassis ]. But a bonus observation is the markings on the brass nozzle fittings -- anybody seen these before ? Seem to be circles with a line through the middle and another line at 90 degrees to the first.

The brass elbow block on the driver side (pic #1) has a row of alternating Weatherhead hexagon stampings and the same oval markings seen on the brass hose nozzle fittings (stamping is faint, but this is what I make out).

Last pic is of fuel line hoses and tower clamps removed from this car a long time ago; the short ones in 1987, as they were weeping and dripping gasoline. They also have the 3 raised ribs.

All this is very well described in the '65 TIM&JG, Chassis section, including acceptable head configuration & markings of subject drain plugs.
