      Chris,

To confirm, are you talking about the 4 shocks in the suspension, or the steering stabilizer / damper shock unit?

I'm guessing you mean the steering unit.

Sorry, I was in a BLINDING hurry last night.

I'm wondering about the finish of the steering shock / stabilizer. Sounds like it is the same shock grey as the main shock absorbers for the suspension.

No, I'm relatively sure it's black. That's why I asked.

Ok, so one vote for black, one vote for grey.

I suspect that Pete said gray because that's the color of the 4 suspension shocks. Again, your original question was not clear so that's why I asked for a clarification.

Personally I have never, ever seen a steering stabilizer "shock" in gray.

Well,I think I answered my own question. I found and cleaned off my original steering shock. Check it out, it's grey. Found a date of 6 A 66 on it. (I have an early 67)

                    Interesting.

So, you made me look in all my picture books. All the cars there have power steering. Next I went to my 66 JG, and found out that - it says they're gray.

                    Learned something today.

                      That's a good deal.

Plus, I'm just going to clean up my original and put it back on the car. SHOULD get all my originality points.....

Patrick, what page did you find that in the 66 JG? In the 67 JG it has the power steering cylinder is semi-gloss black but I can't find anything about color of non-power cylinder. I realize the JG from 66 and 67 may be different but I was like you and thought it was suppose to be semi-black.

I checked Noland's book and Dobbins' book and they all had power steering showing, and I couldn't find mention of the "standard" steering stabilizer color.

My information says that the manual steering damper was eliminated sometime in the 1968 model year. Saginaw didn't supply the damper or the relay rod (or the tie rods for that matter.) So I don't have access to the Chevrolet drawings for those parts.

Maybe I'm overlooking it but apparently that was a change in the 66 and 67 JG. It was late when I tried finding it though and maybe I wasn't looking in the right place. In my 4th edition 67JG sec 7 where they talk about the steering stabilizer cylinder (page 135) for non-power cars there is no mention about color. On page 136 they do talk about power steering cylinder and says it is semi-gloss black. The replacement (AC Delco) that was on the car when I got it is black. Anyone else out there with a 67 JG that can point it out?
