Was the steering box painted on 67 non-power steering?

I believe it was both ways... natural or painted black. I'm sort of a neatness freak so I painted mine to prevent rusting......

I think that most, if not all, 1967 steering boxes were painted. Some C3 steering boxes were not, though.

          Steve -

When I visited Buffalo in 1967, the steering linkage was hung horizontally on the paint conveyor from two hooks - one through the pitman arm hole, and one through the idler arm upper bolt hole; the lower half of the idler arm appeared to get some paint, although I'm sure it varied.

John, Thanks for the reply. So these were spray painted and not dipped. At least part of the idler had to catch some paint if the whole assy was painted.

The pitman arm was probably preassembled to the steering box and was also painted if the box was. Again it too probably caught some paint in the process....

On manual steering cars, the pitman arm was part of the steering linkage assembly from Buffalo. On power steering cars, the pitman arm was installed at St. Louis as part of the bench assembly that added the control valve, power cylinder and hoses to the linkage.

The only item that came as part of the steering gear from Saginaw was the rag joint.

Were the clamps, nuts and bolts painted as part of this finishing process?
