How far should the push rod stick out of the firewall when the MC is not installed and how much travel shoud it have when the pedal is pushed all the way to the floor? My MC is leaking and I'm wondering if the push rod is going in too far. Also, which hole on the brake pedal should the linkage be connected to?

Re: 63 Brake Push Rod Questions
If you have the correct manual brake master cylinder for the application, the rear piston should have a "deep" hole (about 1-1/2") for the pushrod; the clevis on manual brake cars goes in the upper hole in the pedal arm.- Top

Re: 63 Brake Push Rod Questions
John,
As Jonh H. stated it will stick out of the firewall and into the Master Cylinder. As to excactly how far you are to adjust the rod so the there is about 1/8" of free pedal travel before the rod engauges the piston in the master cylinder.

Re: 63 Brake Push Rod Questions
John and Rich- thank you very much for the helpful information. I have a follow up question regarding the bleeding of a MC. After I bench bleed the MC and install it into the car and adjust the pedal 1/8 inch out I will then go to bleed the air out of the lines. I'm told that during the bench bleeding process, I shouldn't push the piston in more than 1 inch or it could go past the rear leak seal and begin to leak. How do I prevent this from happening after I install the MC on the firewall? When I pull on the rod through the firewall w/o the MC installed, the rod extends another 1 3/4 - 2 inches. If you have to push the brake pedal down to get the air out of the lines, how do you prevent from pushing the rod in too far? I'm just really nervous about this damn thing leaking again. I just had it resleaved and rebuilt.- Top

Re: 63 Brake Push Rod Questions
John,
I always install the master cylinder first and bench bleed it on the car with the brake pedal. Once a good bleed has been obtained I then hook up the brake lines to the master cylinder. This has always worked for me.

Re: 63 Brake Push Rod Questions
John,
I have always went to the extent of travel on the pedal and never had a problem. If you want to check how far the rod moves just have someone in the car depress the pedal while you measure the amount the rods travels. But like I said I had never had a problem just depressing the pedal all the way. Some one else may chime in here but thats 28 years worth of bleeding brakes with no trouble.
