    63 steering column reassembly

    Is there a measurement for the bottom clamp from the end of the steering column? Got top and bottom bearings just fine.

    I seem to recall there was something in the AIM about how much pressure to put on that clamp. I used a vise grip to put slight pressure on the spring and hold it there while I tightned the clamp. It seems to work fine.

      Greg, Bob -- Here's what the '65 AIM says, and I find it very confusing. This may not apply to 1963 MY, as note #2 was added on 7_20_64, but it makes no sense, IMO. Axial movement of 0.010 min to 0.30" max. on clamp (item #6) ??? This shouldn't move at all, as holds the steering tube from moving relative to the lower firewall support (item # 11), along with U-clamp under instr. panel.

      All I do is slide the "stop" up the shaft until there's a (say) 1/8" min. compression of the spring, then tighten the stop bolt. I think the purpose of the spring is to keep the upper and lower bearings fully seated, yet without binding.

      I'd be interested in hearing if others have the same opinions in this area.

        Wayne;

        I believe you are correct.. On my 1963, I set that spring and collar the same way, perhaps with a bit more than 1/8" of spring compression.. To your point, that spring is there to keep the bearings in place... not much more than that which I can see.
