    62 fuel injection question.

I ran across a for sale advertisement for a 62 fuelie which the guy swears is factory original because it has a dimple in the firewall.
    What are they referring to?
I understand the air cleaner attaching plate on the left fender and the relocated washer tank, but what does the dimple refer to?
    Thanks.

    Re: 62 fuel injection question.

Ok, '62 was the first year for all engines to use a distributor drive tach, and the dimple was used to center the hole for the tach cable to go thru. The FI requires the tach drive hole to be offset toward the driver, so a "real" FI car will show a dimple on the pass side of the tach cable hole as compared to the carb car that would hace the dimple on the drivers side of the tach hole. Attahced photos, from a known original FI car may help, one is taked looking under the shielding and one from the top, looking down behind the shielding. So any '62 will have an unused "dimple, the question is where is it located? This can be used along with the many other "tells" in assessing the originality of a '62 Fueler. (Look closely for evidence of bodywork "Moving" the hole/dimple).

Bruce, Without a doubt that dimple is probably the best way to tell if the 62 is a fake or real deal. The car could be missing the front end and engine. But if the dimple is there you got a winner.

Barry Holmes pointed this out at a Pittsburgh chapter judging seminar about 10 years ago or so when he was restoring his 62.
All the other holes and crap can be created with bucks but the dimple is the key. Course Clupper already told you this. I believe Noland Adams has this info in his 1st edition book. JD

          Bruce
The first reference to the firewall dimple that I remember was by Rev. Mike in an article he did for the Vol.5 No. 1 (Summer '78) issue of the restorer titled "Fueler or Fooler".
It pretty much outlined all of the things to look for and was very informative in the earlier days of the NCRS. It might still be worth a look if you can find a copy.
