Another Lt-1 fuel pump question 40709 vs 40956

Was there any design difference between the 40709 and 40956 fuel pumps? I had previously read that the difference was just a part number change. I have one 40709 and a 40956 and notice in comparing the two that the angle of the nipple outlet points in a different direction between the two.

The 40709 points more toward the motor and slightly back, while the 40956 points more away from the motor and in a slightly back angle.

The angle of the 40956 seems more logical in that it is more toward the metal line coming from the tank.

I see no evidence that the 40709 has been modified. Is this the angle that should be expected from an original 40709? Or has this likely been modified for some reason??

The 40956 is on left and 40709 is on right in photo

Good research Brad. You have it exactly right.

At one time, back when I was 1970-72 Team Leader, that information on the direction of the inlet fitting was to go into the TIM&JG -- but I think it was axed by the editor.

Thanks Terry. I actually put a 40956 on my 71 instead of putting the 40709 back on it, because the (1) 40956 one was NOS, (2) the color is quite washed out on my 40709, and (3) I thought no one would no any different. Looks like I may need to re-think that decision......

You might want to check the TIM&JG -- maybe my suggestion made the cut after I left the NTL position. Just so that there are no surprises.

No, they ignored you, it is not discussed. But now that I know there is a physical appearance difference, I may swap it out.

I will have to try and get that information put into the next revision.
