    1959 engine smoke

    Looking for some ideas, rebuilt 283 .04 over, fresh heads by Engines Unlimited. Blows lots of light blue smoke on both banks after it starts to warm up. Compression test all cylinders are 150 to 155, leak down test nothing over 20%. All plugs have oil on threads and tip, switched intake manifold and checked gasket 3 times, replaced valve stem seals with new unbrella style, guides are uncut. New gas tank by Quanta products, carbs just rebuilt by Kunz. About 40 miles on engine, runs real strong but so much smoke, ac 45 plugs. any ideas where oil might be coming from.
    Thanks Steve

    Valve Guides usually a source if not replaced.

    Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

          Steve,

          "About 40 miles on engine"...Is that correct?

          Are your rings seated? There was a thread a couple of months ago where a break-in procedure was discussed. It's reasonably close to what I use. 40 miles is probably not enough driving to seat the rings.

          This is probably the probelm, since you would'nt have 8 broken rings and you have already checked the seals.

            Did you check intake gasket to match the heads and intake, Buying intake gasket they usually give you 327's to 350 that are to large , had that problem before . Hard to get the correct 265 and 283 gaskets. Look again !!!

              I was thinking the same thing on breakin, I'll look for that old post. Also I'll take another look at the intake gaskets to make sure they are correct. It might just need some miles to seat everything but it really smokes alot. thanks for the reply's

                Steve;

                I would check with Randy to see what kind of valve seals he used on the rebuild. Also, check what kind of cam and lifters are you using...

                On my 1963, I went with an aftermarket solid cam with new solid lifters and wound up with a blue smoke condition... Evidently the new style solid lifters pump much more oil than did the originals, meaning that there is much more oil up in the heads at any given moment... Unless Randy installed Positive valve seals (used the original style instead), you may find oil dripping down some/all valve stems (assuming an new style set of lifters)... Pull an exhaust manifold and take a peak into the exhaust ports... if you see oil on the valve stems, you have found your problem.... have the valve seals replaced with Positive type and you will be OK. I did this on my 1963 and the smoke went away... like night and day!!!

                Good luck,

                Joel

                  "Leakdown test nothing over 20%"??? Please correct me if I'm wrong, honestly...You are losing 20% on a leakdown test?

                  When I was racing Late model Stocks a 5% loss was a concern after 3/4 of a season running at over 7000RPM. If you are losing 20% after 40 miles visit your engine builder with some big friends!

                    Re: 1959 engine smoke

                    On my leak down tester 20% is right in the middle of the green area of the gage, I would have been concerned if it would have been in the yellow or the red area.
