    57 engine dip stick

Can anyone post a picture of an original 57 dip stick and the measurements. I am told it should be 18 3/4 inches long. Is that from the loop to the end of the stick. Also what color should the tube it goes in be.

    Thanks Craig

Dimensions are called out in the P&A Catalog (Parts & Accessories). They're referenced from the bottom of the upper seal (below the handle) to the Full and Add marks on the stick...

Craig, Jack's referring to a '57 Parts Book. You can probably order a reprint from the NCRS Store or get one off of e-bay. A 57 dipstick will have a "M or B" manufacturer's logo and "add and full" text is debossed (raised on the backside). Handle was originally zinc or CAD plate and blade is natural finish. Dipstick Tube is also a natural steel finish. Dipstick is 19 1/2" (rounded up) from washer to full mark. Washer is staked with a round punch approximately 1/8" in diameter. 21.6" from bottom of dipstick to bottom of washer and 1.9" from top of washer to center of 1" diameter handle. Hope this helps. Gary....

              Thanks Gary and Roy

Do you think the 57 add and full has the arrows like Roys or just the add and Full. I have two dip sticks and they are both different and not like either of these.

              Craig

Ps I found the part and accessories book I had bought at hershey a few years back and it does have a good drawing in it. I had forgot all about it. Thanks Jack

What is so neat about this forum now is that we can post pic's and compair .The bottom pic is what you mostly see in many C1 Corvettes the (replacement stick below) my original 55 stick above as you can see is narrower then the 57 up and that's why it's so hard to locate a 55 stick .

Plus, some caution needs to be exercised when we present this/that part as an example of 'correct/original'...

Do we really know if the item was made by GM or purchased from a supplier? If it was made by GM, was there really only one set of production tooling at the time?

If it was a purchased part, you can almost hang your hat on the notion GM didn't approve a sole source buy! That means there was probably AT LEAST one other supplier whose part was probably different in some identifying manner...

Your right that's why we see (A,M or W) logo's all different suppliers to GM

also notice the letters are raised and not just stamped.

                          Re: 57 engine dip stick

Enclosed are pictures of a dipstick from a 1956 Chevrolet w/265 engine stamped "0027077" and "T56F" on the pad. The "washer" is missing. I believe the dipstick to be GM #3722959 (Gr. 1.516). The measurement from the "FULL" mark to the spot where this "washer" would be is 21 9/16" exactly as described in my 1957 Chev. parts catalog. This "washer" would be about 1/16" below the small bump. The distance from the "FULL" mark to the "ADD" mark measures about 21/32" (picture on right). The overall length from end to end measures 24". There ia also a very small letter "E" (middle picture) stamped on the handle about 5/16" above the small bump. According to the 57 Chev. parts catalog the 3722959 was used on 56-57 Chevrolets and Late 56-57 Corvettes.

I have many other Chev. & Corvette dipsticks from the 1960's. They very in length and style and have various letters stamped on them ("B", "E", and "M").
