    Corvette Honors

    1984 Corvette

Motor Trend car of the year

Any other Corvettes have this honor?

I know lots of people don't like the 84 Cross Fire, but I think it is sort of a neat car. I just like the unusual. I'm not into drag racing and have no intentions of modifying it and it will go as fast as I need to go on the street. I got a good deal on this car and have enjoyed working on it. I guess I am bonding with it. After all it is a part of Corvette history.

Can someone send me a picture of the decal "Motor Trend Car of the Year" that came on these cars? I have read about them, but never seen one.

Does anyone have a pic of the "Motor Trend Car of The Year" decal that was placed on the 84 Corvette hatch window? I have read about it but never seen one.

I have always had a soft spot for 84s. A friend who had one new and was nice enough to let a 19 year old drive it around for a day. It was the first Corvette that I drove. Lots of fun

I have a miniture version of the decal on my 84. It was given to me by a Corvette owner. You can have one custom made and if your good enough with the right computer you could probably make your own. The decal was not on every 1984. In fact I believe only a few had them. There is also a option that very few 1984s had . It was pin stripe option D98 and that code would be on your cargo label behind the seats. Dont get it mixed up with D9B. This option DOES exist even though many NCRS members disagree. I know because I spoke to the fellow who put them on the cars at Bowling green. He is a member of the Gorden Killebrew organization. The decal is available through body shops only manufactured by 3M. Chances are you car does not have the option. Few did. It will be a long time before the 84 is considerd a collectable car. A lot were built. But I agree the 84 does have some draw to it. I display mine at shows with the history of what Dave McLellan was trying to do with the 84. He was going after Porsche and was very sucessfull making it the first Corvette to pull a 1G on the skid pad. The crossfire gets a bad rap. Its a dependable and efficent fuel system. Most of the bad press comes from the Corvette community itself. The same people that knock the 84's engine I guess dont realize the 82 had the same motor and if you look at VetNInvestments you will see what 82's are selling for. They are a hot item by many Corvette buyers. Like every first year Corvette model improvements come with age. The same rings true with the 84. But I love mine and find in special in its own sort of way.

I bought a 84 in 1990. I still have it today. I restored the car and did some custom mods to it. My wife and I drove the car all over the south east and it has been a very dependable car. It always got home and never left us on the side of the road. The car will start right up and it handles very well. We still have it and take it out for a ride from time to time. We love the car it is part of the family and one day it will be handed down to my son.

I am the original owner of my '84, #4935, and my COTY decal was sent to me a month or so after the award was presented to the Corvette. It came with a letter, template for placement, and a piece of flat plastic (kind of like a squegee) to help flatten it during application. I did install it and have kept the accompanying items.
Re the D98 pinstripe option; I thought this was determined not to be true a year or so ago. Has there ever been a window sticker or build sheet shown to include this? Or an untouched original car with them? Every month there are some extremely low mileage '84's for sale in various publications and they never reference this option-you would think if any of these cars had it the presence would be publicized. When these cars were new I saw many at dealers in CA and other states during my travels and never saw or heard of these stripes, and I was always looking at them in detail for any differences from mine as running changes were made. Until I see some real documentation on these stripes I'm going with the dealer installed theory.

Walter, this thread discussed this supposed option and includes a couple pics of cars I found with similar looking stripes, one of which claimed to be an original owner car. But I've yet to see any kind of factory documentation to support it.

On page 7 of the Gordon Killebrew book option codes Corvette 1984-1996. D98 "Body side accent and deck lid stripes" The stripes are tomato red and silver. 3M part #74807. I spoke with the owner of and 84 that had the stripes and took them off because he thought they looked silly. When he checked hid deck lid and found code D98 he investegated and found it was the very stripes he took off. Since he wanted originality he contacted the Killebrew people and was able to get information about the 3M part number. His 84 now has them on it. When I contacted the Killebrew people I was put in touch with one of the line workers who built the early C4s. When I tried to tell him no such part existed I was told he knew it did because he put them on the cars. Gordon Killebrew is respected by the Corvette community and I have to think people in his organization know what they are talking about. I have the stripes sitting in front of me but when I looked further at my option codes I found what I thought was a 8 was a B. Needless to say I was disappointed.

Walter F., I think it would be interesting as hell if it could be proved this existed as a factory option, and I have no reason to disbelieve Gordon K. or his book. It just seems like there would be more factory documentation, even for a really rare option. A couple questions:

Did you see the D98 code on this original owner's car? Could you get a picture of it and post it? We've already seen on your car that the D9B code can look very similar to a code apparently reading D98.

Could you direct that owner to the previous thread I linked and ask him if his stripes looked like the stripes I posted in those pictures?

Also, could the Killebrew people explain the rhyme or reason why so few cars got them, and why did those get them at all?

Again, I have no dog in this hunt, and actually think it would be really cool to prove such an obscure option existed. And I apologize to the OP for helping hijack this thread.

Thomas I would never discount the 1984 Corvette as a car to have and keep. Keep it and enjoy it. The first C4 I drove was a 4-speed C4 that belonged to a club member. I really liked it. Drove another C4 later that was an automatic and liked it a lot as well. At the time I had only driven my 68 and 70 Corvettes. I drove the C4 automatic home to replace the the electric antenna for a co-worker. That was a learning experience for me. Few years later I bought a used 85 and still own it and like it very much.

If the phantom stripes are tomato red and silver what colors were they if applied on different colored cars? I can't imagine a red/silver stripe on an '84 painted in either of the bronze shades or the gold or blues for that matter. Once some factory documentation surfaces I'll become a believer but until then I would like answers to Pat's questions as well. How could dealers order them if not listed in an ordering guide?
