    Plastic Lugnut Caps C4

Is there an instruction sheet which has tightening instructions for the plastic lugnut caps for an '85?
If so, what is the suggested tightening procedure for the plastic caps.
    Thanks in advance.

If you look at section 6 of the owners manual along with the tightening spec for the Wheel nuts (110N-m or 80 Lb-ft) there is a spec for the "nut cap" at 2.5 N-, or 22 in-lbs. Should work.

Thanks Bill. For what year Corvette is the manual that you are referring to?

It should not make any difference as far as the plastic cap torque goes. Basically, all C4 Corvettes that used lug nuts with plastic caps used basically the same cap although there were some color and minor configuration differences.

          I agree, Joe.
Only that I didn't see any reference to the plastic caps in my 1985 Owners' Manual, or in the 1985 HELM Shop Manual before I asked the question.
I'll tighten the new chrome caps in the same way I have always tightened the original black ones................."hand tight" by turning the 3/4" socket attached to a short 1/2" drive extension without any ratchet attached.

Particular reference was from an '86 manual.

William my 1985 owners manual has the 80 LB-ft for the wheel nuts.
My 1985 Corvette GM Service manual on page 3E-9 shows 100 LB-ft. It also shows 80 LB-ft for the spare tire.

I use the torque information from the service manual.

I have a plastic bag in the glove box of my 1985. The bag has a picture of a finned wheel the five screw caps. Printed on the bag "SCREW CAP TO WHEEL NUT 22 IN. LB. TORQUE PART NO. 10028657". The bag has been empty since I bought my 1985 from the original owner in 1992.

My 96 LT4 owners manual shows 100 LB-ft and my 1996 Corvette GM Service manual shows the same.

                Jim:

My '85 Corvette was not delivered with that plastic bag. There were a few "bonus" items that came with the car when delivered, and a couple "original" items were "lost" as part of dealer prep. That plastic bag, which I suspected was the only source for the plastic cap installation torque, was among the missing items.

Prior to my original posting, I made an unsuccessful search for a reproduction of the item you refer to.

I have never put a torque wrench to wheel lug nuts. I learned very early on what proper torque "feels" like on a 4-way lug-wrench, and it has worked out well for about the last 45 years. Besides, it would be a neat trick to spin lug nuts on with a torque wrench.
