    67 Rally Wheel Paint

To be perfectly correct, do the insides of my DC-coded rally wheels need to be semi-gloss black? Thanks.

Yes. The wheels came from the supplier already dip-painted black enamel. The Argent Silver exterior paint was shot by Chevy.

Typically, the wheels were hung by their valve stem holes and sprayed on the outside. That produced random lines of overspray onto the back through the 'spoke' or center spider slots. The paint work was quick and dirty typified by runs/sags in the Argent Silver, following gravity (downward from the valve stem hole).

Kirk, here's a few pics of the original spare tire, I found in the tub of my 46,000 mile "barn find" '67 (this car put up in the barn sometime during 1979).
As you can see, on this wheel, there is relatively heavy argent silver "spray thru" on the black back side of the wheel. To my knowledge, this wheel has never been re-painted, or touched up. That's a Firestone Super Sport still mounted on the wheel. Will hold air for about 30 days before the dry-rot cracks let the air escape. (keep that in mind to anyone who plans on keeping a "survivor",...."they're only original once".)
      Hope this helps,
      Ridge

        Ridge,
To confirm that you are stating the backside is black..as your photos lead me to believe that the backside color is a color other than black. I understand that colors will fade over time and that maybe the lighting in the photo further made the color look lighter than actual.
        Regards,
        Rick

          Hello Rick!
Sorry that the photos are not very good. It's hard to tell from the photos, as it looks "hazy" in the photos. It's brutally hot here (around 102 or so, along with high humidity), and I think the heat and steamy conditions affected the lens on the digital camera.
In person, the wheel is definitely, originally black, but has heavy overspray on the back from the argent silver paint. I have read many posts about "light" silver overspray on the backs of original wheels, but mine is pretty heavy overspray. I'll try to get a better photo later this evening after the sun goes down.
Hope this description adds a little more understanding. As mentioned, I'll try to post a better pic.

Here's a close-up pic taken inside the house, with flash.
As mentioned before, there is heavy argent silver overspray on the back of this wheel, with what appears to be a semi-gloss black underneath.
