    63 glove box

When having my early 63 judged 2 1/2 weeks ago, I lost points for not having a bulb shield over the glove box light bulb. And having the wrong bulb. (I got the bulb with the new switch)
The Judging guide says. that the early cars up to Jan 63, did not use the shield. Thats why I left it off. (I have it). My car was build DEC 19,62.
The engineering drawing in the AIM also shows the date for the shield to being added after Jan, 63 (not sure the exact date, don't have it in front of me).
For the next time: Should I install the shield or not, and if not, I could have documentation with me, to challenge the next judge, if he deduct points also for not having a shield installed, too.
(I didn't have proof at the time of judging last time)

You can always challenge a judging call. The proceedure is outlined in your copy of the NCRS Judging Reference Manual. The order of events is (1) with the team judges during owner debrief, (2) to the team leader, (3) to the meet judging chairman, and (4) to the national judging chairman IF he's present.

The process may or may not yield the 'relief' you're looking for. The KEY is being calm, cool and rational when you make your case for why you believe the item(s) were judged inappropriately.

In the end, try to put things in perspective. Judges have a finite time to look, assess, and render their calls. We simply can't engage in unlimited 'senatorial debate'. Some calls wind up being a 1-2 point issue that probably will NOT make a difference at the bottom line. Ask yourself if it's worth the time/effort to 'correct' a given judging call!

Sorry, but I never have had a shield on mine either - and it is a July 9 build. I've had it since new and do not remember any such shield. I know I've seen pictures of them and read about them, but it don't ring no bell in my head. I changed out the liner back about 1992 or so when I removed a stereo cassette player I had mounted in the box for many years. I have never thrown out or discarded any piece from this car - usable or not.

Rainer, you are correct. For early 63 cars, there was no such thing as a shield for the I.P. compartment lamp bulb. It was added on AIM date 11 January 1963. That doesn't necessarily mean the shield actually entered production on that day though. More than likely, it was probably at least a month or more later.

Also, because the new shield would not fit the current round bulb, the bulb design and part number were changed also. The new replacement was longer, tubular shaped.

This information is in the 63 AIM, section 12, sheet B4. Make a copy of the AIM sheet and bring it with you for judging.
