LS-5 Water Pump Pulley

During a discussion in another post today, I realized that I may have the wrong water pump pulley. My research now, I believe, confirms this to be true.

Can someone please confirm that a 5 1/2" o.d., 3 groove pulley w/ part # 3889372 is correct for a '70-'72 454? If so, what is the 3rd pulley used for? I have PS and have no need for a 3rd pulley. I'm guessing it's for A/C.

Lynn - I think your pulley is correct and my 2 groove pulley is incorrect, so any belt information I have is likely wrong.

As I wrestled with the belt I did find a GM part number on the puley. Just to Pissed to write it down. As I wresle with this I'm sure I'll have it off tomorrow and will post the number. Thanks for the help!!!

Hopefully someone can confirm my pulleys and help us both!

Tom, before you condemn your pulleys check your AIM, if you have one. If you don't GET ONE NOW!. It will show you what the parts should be and will also give you the correct part numbers in most cases. Many numbers are not included only because they are part of "Sub-assemblies", this is where people like Joe L are so invaluable.

1970 LS-5 used waterpump pulley GM #3889372. This is a 3 groove pulley that was also used for most 68-69 big block applications and some 66-67 big block applications. For 68-69, the outer groove is used for the AIR pump driver. For 1970, the outer groove is, as far as I know, unused.

1971-72 LS-5 used a different pulley. It was configured pretty much like the 3889372 except that it had the larger bolt circle stud holes and a 3/4" pilot hole.
