    1960 Exhaust Tip Question

Looked in all the pubs but couldn't find out how long the tail pipe should be past the the bumper exhaust hole outlet. Right now with the exhaust system in place but not secured entirely, both pipes are two inches past the bumper exhaust outlet.

    Any information is greatly appreciated.

    Thx,

    Jim

    Jim -

I used to set them on my 57's with the end of the pipe about 1/4" past the edge of the bezel so the usual condensate drippage went on the ground, not down inside the lower bumperette where it would eventually corrode through the chrome.

Mine are like what John said above, 1/4" (cold). If you have stainless steel exhaust, expect it to grow in length. When hot, that 1/4" will grow to approx. 1". Makes it hard to get the system rattle free.

        John, Jim,

Thanks for the info. I'm gonna go back and check the tail pipe piece to ensure it is seated all the way to the pipe that connects to the muffler; this will probably take up some slack because that piece is hard to see and to work on.

Is it unusual to cut the end off to ensure the correct length?

        Thx again,

        Jim

I have read that it's meant to be flush with the rear, but it seems the judges don't ping anybody for having them extended a bit. Yes mine are flush and I always get black rubbish down the chrome and also down the wheel well. It makes the rear look like rubbish so extend them out I'm just about to do it to. Stewy

            Stewy,

Have you ever heard of cutting the end off to ensure proper length? I have seated the exhaust pipes all the way, and still have about an inch excess.

            Thx,

            Jim

              Jim -

In my experience, yes - I've always had to trim them.
