I have a 73 LS4 auto. When it was judged at a Chapter Meet, it lost a total of 15 points on the exhaust system, 7 on condition and 8 on originality. I've got extremely rusty pipes, replacement mufflers with wrong part #'s and "Inlet" marked on them, and a clamp between the muffler and pipe (instead of welding). Exhaust tips are service replacement with part #'s on them.
It seems Corvette Central has a pretty decent reproduction available for $325. 2 1/2" pipes all the way back, welded to correct configuration mufflers. Pipes are flattened out under differential just like originals.
So here are the questions:
1) Should I get aluminized or carbon steel? Hate to watch it rust again and get banged for condition.
2) If a magnet sticks to the aluminized do I still get a deduction on originality?
3) How much do I lose from the mufflers not having the embossed part #'s? They'll have no writing on them at all.
4) I can buy a pair of NOS exhaust tips for $600. Seems awfully steep. How many points do I lose just keeping my service replacements?
5) Which exhaust vendors have others used with good judging results?
6) Being that it's a '73, Will Lyle be the first to answer?
