    Starter Nose: painted or natural?

Here is a question that came up at the NCRS Wisconsin meet this past week: was the starter nose a painted or natural surface? The question was based on '67s but I think it would be applicable to all mid-years.

The 67 JG does not specify about the nose, only that the body is black and the end plate natural. I have seen starters both ways and am hard pressed to know what is correct, although my gut says unpainted. I have poured through the Noland Adams book and can't find a suitable picture.

    Please discuss!

    IMHO...
    The nose is natural.
    The cylindrical body is black.
    The end cover is black
    The solenoid is black
The phenolic end on the solenoid is black

Maybe some drive end housings were natural/unpainted but I don't think all were. I think some were painted black along with the rest of the starter.

My '67 Camaro 396 starter (1108338 dated 7 B 14) has the casting painted, but not the part that is in the bellhousing.

The entire starter assembly on the 56 is chrome!

I am a bit surprised by the lack of real responses to this thread. Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

It does not seem like a controversial subject but apparently not many want to put their $.02 in . . .

                  .
Yes, I'm surprised too. It must be a LONG way out to the garage to look at a starter.
