    Rattling noise from starter

I replacement my 67BB starter with a correct dated rebuilt starter and now I hear a tinny / rattling sound which is coming from the starter area.

The previous starter was not shimmed so i did not shim this unit either. The car starts perfectly with no noises. The noise does not appear until 2200 rpm under load only. At idle I can rev the car up to over 3000 rpm with no noise. It happens while driving in any gear, any speed, and starts at 2200 rpm all the way up.
Is there something that can rattle in the starter when the engine harmonics kick in? Is it possible that at 2200 rpm the flywheel moves slightly and makes contact with the starter or perhaps the inspection cover?
Has anyone encountered this problem before?

Is there a bracket required on the front of the starter on that application ? If so, is it in place ?

Lorne check the starterdrive retun spring in the starter solenoide. the spring is what pulls the starterdrive out of flywheel.if the spring is weak it will let starterdrive slide back in flywheel on accellaration. Mike

Also, check the integrity and attachment of the flywheel inspection cover. This sheet metal part bolts to the bellhousing and the starter motor's nose installs through it. That might be the source of your rattling noise...

Plus, I'll presume you did NOT install the anti-moisture putty around the interface of the starter motor and the inspection cover (few do). But, this little detail IS called out in the AIM...

Tom, I checked the AIM and I am supposed to have a support bracket but it is missing. I will definately install one.

Mike, how would I go about checking the starterdrive return spring? Can this be done with the starter installed?

Jack, the inspection cover is tight but I too thought it could be possible that the flywheel is making contact with it at higher rpms. I plan to remove and inspect it as well. As for the putty......this is news to me. I missed it in the AIM.

Thanks for all the good advise as always.

            Lorne -

The starter brace is essential - the starter nose (where the two bolts are) was NOT designed to carry the cantilevered load of the armature, field coils and case.

              Thanks John,
I am going to order the brace this week.

                My bet is on this!
