    Re: Garage Lift

Mark, Yes, I have a daily driver under the 63. My ceiling is 10.5 feet, so I can take the lift to the highest stop. Saying that, the daily driver is not an SUV. A normal car.

What about the overhead garage door? How does that work?
      Thanks

        Re: Garage Lift

I had the door track raised so the door just misses the ceiling on the way up. I also changed to a side mount garage door opener as I already had the spring that assists in the lift across the front of the garage and not attached by cable on the door track. Here is a link to see how the opener mounts. It is also very quiet!

I have 3 backyard buddy lifts. No problems and very reliable.
Sturdy and bolted to the floor. Is Southern California you must
bolt because of quakes. I recommend highly.

            Re: Garage Lift

I have a fairly low ceiling height in my garage. I removed the door open for some extras height, but the overhead door must remain closed when the car is up in the air.
I tried raising the lift once, without the car, and parked under it, the car fit under with no problem. Unfortunatly my head didn't clear the ramp when I exited the car. Won't do that again.
I have been meaning to get the torsion spring for the front of the door and the opener as Harry did, but I haven't gotten to it yet.
Good exercise lifting the overhead door you know.

I may just be taking you up on that offer. I'll drive my road warrior down to see it. You have fun in St. Charles and Milwaukee next week and keep those women folk under control when they see Kenny Chesney or whoever it is that will be playing at Summerfest.

                    Cheers,

I have 18' x 8' doors and a 12' ceiling; had the door in front of my lift bay converted to a "high-lift" configuration, with the horizontal tracks raised to 9" from the ceiling and the standard operator track raised to 2" from the ceiling. Added a dummy panel to the top of the door to solve the geometry issue of converting horizontal pull to vertical lift for the initial portion of the opening and final portion of the closing. Has worked fine for nine years, conversion took my garage door guy about half a day and cost me $600. I can open and close the overhead door with the car raised to full walk-under working height.

This is a GREAT idea. I have basically the same arrangement (just single doors)
                        Thanks

I have a 9000 lb BendPak four post lift. Right now I have a car stored on it and cannot say much about it's operation because it went up once over a year ago and hasn't moved since. I will say that I would recommend that you get a lift that has a maximum height at least an inch or two taller than you are if possible. Mine has a max height of about 71'' and I am just under 72'' so whenever I'm under it I have to stoop. A small hassle. I was happy with the construcion and stability of it and I think it was around $3,000.

I have a 4 post extended height lift. I was fortunately able to incorporate 12' doors and put in 6" of concrete on the floor when I built my garage. I feel a lot more secure when I am prying, reefing, or banging under the car when it is resting on the ramps/jackstands of a 4 post. I've had cars teeter and rock on the arms of a two post before, and it is a very uneasy feeling. JMHO.

I also used a high lift garage door track and a standard garage door opener. I fabricated an extension bar to attach to the door. I have enough height that I can raise my lift all the way up, but I rarely do that. I prefer to work under the car sitting down on a mechanics stool on wheels.

                              Regards,
