    1973 w/454.

    Hello all,
I'm sure someone will have an andwere to this.

    I have a 1973 convertable. w/454. NCRS top flight.
When it gets hot and I turn it off. It won't start until it cools down.,
I was told the starter is getting to hot.
Is there a fix for this that won't ruin the NCRS?
    Thanks

You could try changing the starter and solenoid. Or, you could have your original starter completely rebuilt with all new internal parts (so that it's like new but still retains the original starter frame with "numbers" and "dates"). However, I don't think it will solve your problem. But, I suppose it's worth a try if you want to keep everything as correct as possible.

The ONLY permanent solution I have ever found for this problem is the installation of a remote (i.e. "slave") solenoid to ensure that full current is supplied to the starter solenoid "S" terminal under all conditions.

I agree. Had one, been there, done that.

        Re: 1973 w/454.

Initial timing??? My '72 454 had a leak on the vacuum advance canister so I figured "No problem, disconnect the vacuum line, total time it at 36 degrees and go cruising".

Well, I went cruising stopped for a few minuites and the car wouldn't restart, I too thought the starter might be going bad. Knowing that there was an existing problem I decided to make sure the ignition system was properly working so I replaced the VAC, re-timed it and havn't had a problem since. Good luck!!

Andrew, Its A Double Whammy With The Exhaust Manifolds So Close To The Starter, And Heat Generated From The Engine Block When Shut Down,as The Last Post A Properly Tuned Engine Is A Must, Ie. Carb Adjustments ,timing, Vaccum Hose Connections, another Problem Sometimes Is The Engine Temp. Older Cars Tend To Hotter When Debris Gathers In Front Of Radiator Or Lodges Its Self Between The Cooling Fins, Engine Themostat, Check For Proper Operation, 180 Degrees Themostat Helps, also On The Big Block Starters Theres A High Temp. Gasket Between The Solonoid And Starter Motor To Help With Heat Transfer. Hot Soak Is The Reason The Starter Motor Doesnt Work.lastly If All Else Fails The Purchase Of Blanket To Go Over The Starter Motor Helps.and Can Be Removed Before A Ncrs Event. Hope All Goes Well.
