63 Powerglide Shifter - Drive to Low Detent

The other day driving the '63 at about 50 mph, I put my hand on the shifter, thinking I was driving my 4-speed '59, and it dropped down to low gear. It scared the heck out of me.

It seems you shouldn't be able to go from D to L without moving the handle to the side first, as appears on the shift pattern plate. Is there a problem with this one?

The detent might be worn, but there is definitely one built into the linkage design.

Hmmmm, so I was playing around in the garage with the shifter some more. It seems like it's intermittent. With engine off, if I go from park to drive quickly, it seems to not drop to Low but stops. If I wiggle a little bit, it'll drop to Low.

Pappy, maybe both of them are worn... yours and mine(i mean hers....wife's car). I'll get under it and see if I see anything odd.

        Thanks,
        Rich
