Rickman, it's 3 hrs from DFW or Love Field (Southwest Airlines) and 1 1/2 hrs from Austin. Austin has lower volume # of flights, but also does SWAL. Gary....

      Rick, thanks for registering.

I am sure you will have adequate flight options if you use Austin as your arrival/departure point. Killeen is North of Austin; however, the Austin airport is South of Austin but that should not be a problem. I-35 all the way from near the airport to Killeen.

Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport is another option although a longer drive, also on I-35.

      Per Google Maps:
DFW to Killeen = 2.5 hrs, 154 miles
Austin to Killeen = 1.5 hrs, 87 miles

      Best regards,

Former Chef of mine is at Shilo Suites in Killeen, he used to put out some nice food. Might want to check out their restaurant and Ask for Chef Montgomery...

I am stationed at Ft Hood and the Killeen area. Another route to consider is to fly directly into Killeen Airport. Research flights using the "GRK" Airport code.

my son was stationed at Ft Hood and he suggested Austin - said "real tiny" planes fly into Killeen

                    Michael,

thanks for the info on the chef - my biggest concern is that the hotel bar has LOTS of Makers Mark on their shelves

                      Rick,

The Ft Hood Area Airport has been expanded, and is taking larger airplanes. Check the airplane size when considering booking options. Flight time for the connections from any of the connecting airports is only 30-45 minutes. Connections are made at either Houston, Austin or Dallas depending on carrier. My wife and I have been staioned here since 2000, and have flown many times using Austin and Killeen. We without any hesitation recommend flying direct.

                        Frank,

thanks for the vote of confidence - but, already booked non-stop flight into Austin via Southwest for $360.00 - will drive up to Killeen

I was there in1969 for about a month before returning to Viet Nam for my second tour. That was better than spending another day in the 2nd. Armored Div. or Ft. Hood for that matter. That place was a hell hole back then...Tom Stanton
