    70 SB dipstick wording

There was a thread back in February about the wording on early C3 dipsticks:

    https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...stick&uid=6264

A 71 SB dipstick was shown with the words "Add Full Use GM 6041-M Quality MS Oil M", and another poster said his 70 dipstick had these same words. No one suggested these dipsticks were not original, or that some of the wording shouldn't be there. The dipstick on my 70 SB has all of this same wording.

Yet the judging guide on page 70 says "original dipsticks had only the words ADD and FULL stamped on them although some have a W, which is believed to be the makers identification. Toward 1972 production, we begin to see the words USE SE ENGINE OIL, but there was no additional wording and no part number on original dipsticks."

So, is the manual incorrect regarding 70 and 71 dipstick wording?

    Pat,

FWIW, my '71 BB is worded "ADD and FULL", no W and of course the red cap on the loop.

Thanks guys. Any other 70 or 71 owners care to comment?

Pat my original owner 1970's dipstick has the

ADD FULL USE GM 6041 - M QUALITY MS OIL M

The last M I believe is a W stamping, or at least to my eyes when I view it after turning the dipstick and viewing it.

Did you see the post around the 19th of May or so that showed a glob of sealant around the firewall mounted relay? The post was not about the relay, but it was in the picture. There was not any sealant on the two screws. It was posted by Joe Weise Extra vacuum line.

The dipstick on my 71 s/b reads the same left to right with that last letter being an M.

My '70 LT1 has the same wording. The problem is that since I've only owned the LT1 for about a year, I don't know if it's original. Are there any experts out there that can answer this question definitively?

              Thanks.

Sure seems like the manual is wrong, at least regarding some dipsticks. I mean, what are the odds we all have the very same incorrect dipstick? I wonder if the manual editors are aware of this?

Jim - thanks for the heads-up, that's another great picture of the sealant.

The last letter stamp "W" for 70' corvettes (s/b) was used for early production and sometime before 71' production was changed to "M". I am now courious exactly when that change in reverse stamping ("W" to "M") occured. Would any late 70's owners check their dip sticks? Steve

Steven my 70 is somewhat late production, July 1970. It has the M in line with the other stamping information.

It is a smaller M than the other two M's and certainly not the same M stamping.

I think it was a separate stamping and was stamped as a W.

                      Re: 70 SB dipstick wording

While trying to resolve minor details in preparing my 70 Vette for judging in October, I found a discrepency between the Judging Guide and the markings on my engine oil dipstick. When I checked the archieves, I found this on-going discussion. The dipstick on my car has "Add Full Use GM 6041-M Quality MS Oil M" and is a March 70 car. When I checked my 1970 First Edition (January 1970) Owner's Manual, I found this note on page 49:
Note:The oil gauge rod is also marked "Use GM 6041-M Quality MS Oil" as a reminder to use only high quality oils as prescribed under "Engine Oil Recommendations".
I think the Judging Guide may need to be more inclusive since just "Add Full" doesn't seem to cover all original 1970 Vettes.
