    C1 Heavy Duty brake drum swap?

    It wasn't until I finished blasting and painting (high temp cast iron) the brake drums from my '60 with RPO 687 that I noticed that one of them didn't match the others. They all are cast part# 3745534, but one is from an earlier car where the external cooling fins wrap around about 1/2" onto the vertical front face of the drum. I'm making this post on the off chance that someone has a later drum in good condition that they would like to exchange for this one. If so, please contact me and we will swap photos and dimensions outside the forum.

      Sorry to high-jack your thread for a comment, but if you would like a copy of Lee Lilley changing shocks at Nurburgring in May of 1960 where the drum is painted BLACK, I can provide it.

              Loren,

              I know that there are photos out there showing the the big brake drums in both black and unpainted and I expect that this debate will outlast me. Since I intend to have this car judged, I called Tim Mickey, the National Judging Team Leader for my year and asked him. I'm still uncertain if these drums were originally painted, but I followed Tim's suggestion in painting them with high temp cast iron paint as his opinion carries a lot more weight than mine in this case.
